I wouldn't call it great.
cleared the entire game back in the day and I literally remember nothing except krystal and andross at the very end of the game, that and the staff twirl attack spammed to cheese the entire game

The vast majority of Zelda games railroad you. The only difference between them and SFA is that the latter has a lot more narrow passages and tunnels that it forces you down, but there’s an equivalent amount of backtracking and (lack of) sequence breaking to your pre-BOTW Zelda. The only way I could see making SFA feel less like a railroad is if you could do the stones and spirits in an order you choose rather than alternating getting them.
