I still occasionally watch TAS because they usually don't come with a commentary and it does more interesting things, can be stylish or showcase things that are theoretically possible but not practical.
Normal speedruns have too much commentary a lot of the time and it usually isn't entertaining. Swordlesslink was the last one I watched because when he started doing let's plays he actually explained some things, didn't try to be too funny about it but it was like the educational slop we have now but more novel since it wasn't really as prevalent at the time. Then he brought his girlfriend on got really defensive when people didn't like it because it got too casual and detracted from his niche and it just kind of soured the viewing experience. He stopped bringing his gf in but that didn't really fix the damage that had been done.
Last time I saw a modern era speedrunner they opened up with "death to nazis" totally cold, no context and not even a single nazi or Wolfenstein game in sight. Immediately killed whatever commentary momentum they had and I quit watching immediately.
Nowadays if I bother to watch a "anything" run it's to see how it could be broken in a way I didn't think of or maybe to see something cool again like those couple early guilty gear TAS where they have an extended fight sequence between him and Ky just for style's sake or the original guilty gear TAS where sol eats shit fighting justice and immediately starts perfectly guarding/dodging every single attack. That shit's like making a machinima out of the normal game without needing to add quirky dialogue. I love stylish cutscene-esque gameplay and I feel like it's a lost art sometimes.
