The builds are phenomenal. I'm using a Rogue, and what the skill limitation does is force you into deciding what skills synergize with others to lend into how you move about the field and put distance between yourself and enemies.

The ACTUAL problem though, and all RPGs have this, is that none of the enemy or boss or level design account for and/or force the player to change builds, because without a static skillset, it's just too hard.

So you find a cool skill-set and gear build, cool. But what is that actually being used for?

Last Epoch is the easiest ARPG I've ever played by a fucking mile but it is a lot of fun and going in not looking at builds or guides and just deciding on some core skill or class that tickles your 'tism and building outward from that is a lot better than in most games because stuff's so clearly labeled. Grim Dawn's also a lot of fun but I do tend to use existing builds there, and I'll inevitably miss a shrine or something and have to backtrack and get pissed off. When a character's doing well it feels more impactful because of the bullshit though, unlike Last Epoch where a character going well is the norm. Both fun though I've played more Grim Dawn

Story is straight up inferior to to any story in any diablo game just by virtue of how it is told in the most obnoxious way ( wait i take that back, diablo 3 was also terrible)

Game keeps taking control away from your character for in game cut scenes that are not necessary and just interrupt gameplay.
the first story event in the game goes like this

Yes there is a serious problem with these games where they homogenize the end game which leads to them homogenizing the classes because if the entirety of the endgame is about clearing a map with a boss at the end then the only "good" class will be the one that does that map the fastest.
The problem is with the way the content in the games are structured.

Compare this to diablo 2: you had
>mass monster killing builds which would do well for cows or other content
>boss killing builds
>rare monster killing builds (barbarian mostly, because of find item)
which in itself doesnt seem like much but then you have immunities/resistances which means certain classes/specs are going to specialize into 2-3 areas to farm because they are more efficient there. If you look at key farming in diablo 2 for example, you can farm 2/3 keys with a lighting/fire soc, and kill a few prime evils with that build too, but you would need to trade for the final key because of immunities. That guy who was a spec that could get that key felt like his spec mattered because he could do something that not everyone could.

Keep in mind the only reason immunities in D2 were seen as bad is because autists and other retards would go all in on one element then get mad if they encountered a part of the game that was hard or impossible for that 1 element.

Didn't like it. I only played solo and didn't use guides or anything and I'm not very good at these kinds of games. Still it was way too easy. Doesn't even begin to get difficult until the highest difficulty level, which takes a while to get access to.
From there it's just a matter of figuring out the right build that cheeses the damage multipliers, which don't work how you'd expect from the descriptions so you really need to use online tools to work it out. But there's no point because by the time you get to the highest difficulty you've already seen everything in the game. Only reason to keep playing is to try to get on a leaderboard, and in that case you just find and copy someone else's build.
All of the skill is in understanding the bugs in the game's build system so you can exploit them.

Now the shot of Inarius slowly descending upon an army of demons was diablo, weird that they could get it so right there but miss everywhere else.

I tried this season for the first time since I think season 2. It's literally just d3 but every system is slowed down to waste your time. The premade builds aren't as fun as d3 and it looks ugly and cheap

I really love the design and open world of d4 only I wish the traversal was like 1000% slower. Imagine a d4 which is still an arpg but dips its toes into survival horror. Reduce monster quantity in mobs but dont reduce mod quantity. Make the gameplay way slower and methodical, with a lot of reliance of crowd control and skillshots, like lost ark but not a cakewalk like lost ark. Actually difficult and with more impact. Could be amazing.

NTA but I do wish the community would at least maintain a list for solofags, it sucks to want to see how I can improve my character only to see that it's entirely reliant on reaching the endgame of a new account and it's only usable for like 3 months. As the other anon points out, it's a pre-sequel set between 2 and 3 and once the levelling story ends and it kicks off it's 2nd arc with Cain leaving. It actually ends up trying to do it's own thing by being a sequel to Diablo 1 more than Diablo 2. Of course there's still all the diablo main stays, go to Tristram, fight the Butcher, do shit with Tyrael and go kill Diablo which ended their second story arc. But the plot's a lot more built around giving a bit of backstory to some of the diablo 3 heroes, or Adria and the current main villain of the story. Prince Albrecht

D4 is really cool and feels like a true sequel to d2. Has amazing aesthetics and art direction for starters and character costumization is great. The combat is super satisfying and seasons are entertaining. That said i only play HC so i normally die before endgame lol but i like it

In PoE these are irrelevant until you've played 50+ hours, then you simply chuck forward $30 bucks when on sale and you're set on stash tabs forever. You are wrong. just because some games dont handle it well doesnt mean its bad. Mechanics are good or bad depending on their relation to the rest of the game. In diablo 2 for example durability is a worthwhile mechanic because it allows for ethereal items and allows for more rare chase items like etheral rares with good stats and inherent durability repair. Also its just nice to find an ethereal weapon that is good and use it sparingly for bosses.

Also dark souls 2 would have interesting mechanics with durability, like armor pieces exploding and doing AoE damage when they break, or weapons that change what they do when they break but dont necessarily do less damage.
not only that but how repairing is even done can add depth, like forcing you to ration your weapons while on a campaign.

How game design works is that it can go into fads, you get a lot of designers who either dont know what they are doing or are forced to add in features because publisher wants it (either because it can be advertised on the box, or marketing studies show its in all the popular games) so you get people adding features without understanding why it worked in other games and they have nothing going for it. thats just what durability became for a lot of shitty devs, something they added in as a gold sink where it just "forces you to go back to town" but an actual creative game dev could easily figure out ways to make durability add more depth to any arpg

actually yes. world of warcraft over the year has perfected the damage progression and what they found out that in order for an upgrade to feel substantial you need a large damage bump. this is why damage grows exponentially in most games these days, getting +5 damage on your skill that deals 100 just doesn't feel good enough.

What would be better would be a “stat level”. Having Dexterity at 86 points doesn’t mean much. But, we can take that concept and have equipment only give very small stat increases (+1, +2), which increases that stat’s tier.
Dexterity at “high tier” once over 3 points (dictated bY gear only, not by level), means it u locks a certain subset of gains of that main stat.

Here is a well designed system with minimal attributes. each point in strength increases damage by 5%, and adds more carry weight. you can put 20 total points in strength. every 5 points you get a perk, sometimes you choose between 2 perks.

This is for Conan Exiles an open world action RPG survival type game. it has no level scaling, you can find weapons that are end game viable right in the starting zone from good rng from bosses. you can beat end game content without leveling up if you "just dodge bro" (the game has baby mode mechanics) but being higher level feels way better and the world feels dangerous at all levels. Its actually very well designed in part because its so simple.

A system similar to this but adopted for an arpg like diablo could work, and have weapon upgrades mostly be flat damage with a few pieces of gear having +1 or +2 to an attribute but most suffixes on gear being gameplay oriented bonuses instead of just damage or health bonuses.

However, action rpgs still have the problem of action combat, and so percentages still are strange.

The better option is to always offer a visual and small system upgrade. +15% damage doesn’t mean anything. “Throw 1 extra knife” is what you want.

I dunno man, been playing Rogue for a first playthrough the last few weeks. I love it, the spacing, the movement.

Enemy types are simple, I think the game is scared to put diverse enemies into the early game. We’ll see if that holds up later.

Been playing season 10, first time since launch. It's substantially better than before. The easy brain off gameplay is fun in its own way. Expansion campaign and new zone is lame as hell tho. Current seasonal mechanics are OP. Legendary item effects are pretty much just another skills. They should just have a separate menu where you drag and drop them on equipment, like another skill tree. Instead of the clunky imprint at enchanter.
Presentation and production are the best parts of the game still.
Need 2-3 more different endgame game modes.
Overall good gam to blast for a month, but I can't see myself coming back each season or making it my main ARPG.

It was real eye opening for me to see how much broken shit is in this game that never gets patched meanwhile during the second season of poe2, the one that was a shit show and everyone hated got over thirty patches in a month, I looked at how many patches diablo 4 got and it was something like FIVE in half a year meanwhile this is all the people working on the game, what the fuck do they do all day?

poe2 has plenty of bugs that have been going on for months. demon form for example still has a bugged weapon swap. demon form stays stuck when you desecrate. demon form stays stuck in the boat in act 4.
