I'm still sticking with v.47.05. Newer versions still haven't given me a good enough reason to give up tilesets and the keyboard only controls I've committed to muscle memory.

v52 is the same as the steam version
2016 is what you want if you want the most up to date version without fucked controls
40d is what you want if you wan to play the game at its peak before it started getting ruined with stupid bloat

Dwarf Fortress is eternally single-threaded, so computers will never, ever get better at running it and every computer will eventually reach performance falloff. Every new addition to the game makes it run worse.
Many players will point to some nostalgic version and say "it was perfect here, and everything afterwards doesn't add much to the game"

>and every computer will eventually reach performance falloff.
that's because dwarves are retards and keep personal posessions which you can't even see once they do and they end up accumulatingnso many of them that it causes the game to eventually crash, assuming your fort can survive that long without everything going horribly wrong at the worst possible time, like a dwarf going insane and going on a cannibalistic killing spree while a combined army of orcs and kobolds assault your fort and you already had a miasma problem going on that you were in the middle of dealing with

they're shit because they added too much shit that then contributes to causing the game to run progressively worse as the fort goes on and accumulates cruft

has the developer ever considered optimizing the game?

like for instance when they added evil and cursed biomes, pieces of bodies come to life and attack and iirc, this can even happen even if the owner of the body part that got chopped off isn't dead yet. and mind you, this applies to everything, not just body parts from your dwarves, but also the enemy races and animal races and neutral/friendly races
this can quickly spiral shit out of control as a myriad of body parts hit the ground during battles
the only saving grace is that this only applies to evil/cursed biomes, so you can just not embark in those to avoid it, or just play a version from before they added them

i don't know because i stopped following it a long time ago, i would like to imagine tarn did what he could to optimize the steam version but it isn't a matter of optimization but rather garbage collection and the error of having dwarves claim objects for themselves and those objects being effectively invisible and uninteractable to the player (at least without hacking tools) and thus there being no way to clean them the fuck out

i thought steam version was great but if you dont want it then i'd go with the last version of dwarf fortress accelerated which cuts a lot of chaff so the game runs more easily and you can run large embarks with no issue

It has keystroke shortcuts now, but it still fucks me up that I can't use my arrow keys to be precise about anything.

Multithreading a codebase as large and ancient as dorf fort would unironically take so much time and effort he’s better off making dwarf fortress 2 instead
