Help me git gud and consistently L/I this game. Pods has to be the worst mechanic of all time; it's complete RNG how those patrols move and tied to line of sight which is a mechanic that makes no fucking sense.

Fuck this RNG bullshit

The first retaliation tends to be the make or break of a run. Hope for reapers as your starting faction and try to keep 2-3 grenadiers fresh until that point, because those grenades are vital for guaranteed damage and cover destruction.

Check out Sykenplays. He has a lot of L/I challenge runs on his channel. You have to play in a somewhat autistic manner so it takes a really long time.

If you can't flank or flanking is just too risky, destroy the enemy's cover with explosives and then shoot them. Before you make a move that involves a dice roll, make sure to have considered what you can do salvage the situation if the dice roll fails. For example, if taking a shot requires you to move a soldier into a position where they'll be at risk if they fail to get the kill, make sure you can either drop smoke on them or flashbang/otherwise disable that enemy so your soldier is less likely to get killed on the enemy turn.

I wish I could help you OP but this game filtered the ever living fuck out of me. I loved X-Com Enemy Unknown too. One of my favorite games.

legend is an exercise in tedium. xcom 2 already drags after the midgame, legend exacerbates that for no reason.
for me it's commander with difficulty mods.

People who complain about pods should just quit playing because they're too fucking dumb for this game
Anonymous No.722975520 [Report]

Complaining about pods being a silly mechanic is completely reasonable. I absolutely understand why x-com veterans think that.
People who complain that pods are unfair however are just openly displaying that they don't realize the mechanic actually favors the player, not the other way around.

>2025
>anons still getting filtered by xcom 2 and crying
fucking hell this is pathetic
if you're that bad at the game, use reapers so early game is braindead
rush weapons first then armor
get experimental weapons if you want to break the game with ice
if you cant kill assassin with gamesense, use decoys, then shoot her
warlock = mindshield
hunter just shoot him
>it's complete RNG how those patrols move
pods move based on whether or not they're in red/yellow/green alert
making loud noises can attract pods to you, like breaking windows and shooting explosives
green = not alerted
yellow = investigating and will move around, if you make sounds, they will move in your general direction
red = pulled

avatar project isn't real, just ignore it until the bar nearly fills, then do a covert action to reduce it for free.
do a quick facility if you want more time

pay attention to how the levels are generated, the game doesn't have much randomization and you can easily notice the reused prefabs and common spawn spots (e.g. pod will always be around objective)

don't go for regions instantly, focus in one area, find one chosen, kill that chosen by doing the first base assault after you get mag + pred armor

dont cry when your solder dies, its easy to bounceback in xcom 2 and the game is already over on vanilla as soon as you get mag + pred as the snowball's already in full force, and if you abuse experi weps then the aliens can never win

the absolute state of this board

Explosives and sniper gets you outta most situations. Rush for weapon tech and larger squad sizes. The game gets easier the more you progress.

That was what was stressing me out in my only run. It feels like they put too much on your plate and this ticking timer to get thing done in.
Anonymous No.722977386 [Report] >>722978048
I was filtered as well, you'll eventually get it.
I recommend you play WotC first.
The game is considerably harder if you play Shen's last wish and Alien Hunters separately.

Dude I loved legendary. It feels like a real guerilla war. You have limited men, everything takes twice as long, your fucking weapon tier is something you live with in op after op… but they balanced it well, so it’s not impossible and when you get a nice upgrade it’s crazy. Fatigue matters. Lives matter. Sometimes you run away because losing is better than a dead squad. In the end you’re still OP but man it’s a great ride.

if you alt+f4, you can restart the current round
failing critical missions for some reason just lets you start from the beginning instead of giving you a game over

I can't give any real advice because I've not played anything but LW2/LWOTC since they came out.
As far as I remember about legendary was it only expanded the campaign length and didn't really do much.
Abuse reapers and snipers since they're insanely overpowered.

just ignore the dialog
avatar project is just a shitty soft doom counter, its by far the worst doom counter in the series since its constantly irrelevant
if youre playing legend you should already know how the avatar project works so it shouldnt stress you out on legend since you dont interact with it differently

Honestly I've beaten the game twice and I don't know.
Try not to move too much after triggering a pod.
It's bullshit and makes it so the only way you have of flanking is environmental destruction but it's the best I've got.
Anonymous No.722978586 [Report] >>722978714
>>722978252
One of the basic rules for the game is to not sprint into an area you don't have line of sight over.

A common mistake is someone sprinting the frontman of their squad into a pod, after which he can't adjust and gets flanked. "Leaping before you look" or so to speak.
Anonymous No.722978714 [Report] >>722979126
>>722978586
The problem is that pods can spawn very close to each other or move around in general so sometimes moving a little bit can trigger a second pod during the middle of your turn.
This was an issue in the first reboot too.

Gotta teach yourself to make sure that any moves you have to make that reveal new territory are the first moves you make so you still have options to respond. It's a bit artificial, but it's also Firaxis going easy on you compared to the originals were enemies are always activated and will absolutely blast you the second you round the wrong corner.
Anonymous No.722979436 [Report] >>722980783
>>722979126
I've beaten the original too, and it was better.
Sure, you could get shot when stepping on the exit ramp but you could adapt. Use smoke grenades, send unnamed drones, and the like.
The usual strategy was to comb the map, clear buildings, etc. Cool simulation stuff that felt way less gamey.
It was punishing but it was also more consistent.
However, UFO Defense did have one artificial aspect, and that is that after a certain number of turns the alien ai would become aware of your location and go in a straight line towards you. Probably to prevent situations where you comb the entire map because there's an alien patrolling a corner.

WOTC was designed around Legend, i.e. it's "normal" of WOTC.
Vanilla was designed around Commander though.

Completed that together with not losing a single soldier during the whole campaign. One key aspect is to learn to take a mission loss while minimizing all other losses. Now you can obviously save scum it and it is what it is, but that was the biggest hurdle I had to overcome when on my no save scum L/I run. The game will become slow, especially after the mid-game, it will become a bit tedious, but this second post-midgame hurdle also needs overcoming. Other than this, do not even bother with this unless you roll Reaper at the start. I re-rolled my best run to get a Genius/Savant Reaper who absolutely carries the early game. So start like this; re-roll for a Genius/Savant Reaper, save this roll and then play and play, making mistakes, getting destroyed and re-use this same save with your exceptional Reaper.
Anonymous No.722981173 [Report]
>>722981081
I keep the Savant Reaper start roll save as a "vanilla start save" for whenever I want to re-do a L/I campaign.
