What are some JRPGs that have small scale goals? I hate saving an entire planet especially when the world feels so shallow in comparison to the stakes. It doesn't make the whole game necessarily bad, I liked Chrono Trigger and Radiant Historia. It's just overplayed, let me take care of something I can actually care about and comprehend

You don't really get that with JRPGs

this is what made the first couple generations of Pokemon so good. other than that, idk. Etrian Odyssey, kind of? some of them do have escalating stakes, but usually for most of the game you're just adventurers exploring labyrinths

Most Atelier games generally focus on small scale plots

I wouldn't consider EO small scale but it is far more grounded than typical JRPGs.

tbf he had a point
the original RPGs were games where you socialized with your friends and would roleplay as different characters
in JRPGs there's no roleplay and no socializing

Resonance of Fate
The party's goal starts at making ends meet by taking on various contract jobs
And ends at saving one of your member's life.
That's it. Your party's goals never get more grandiose than saving a single life.

Your actions do end up having ramifications that effect the Theocracy of your nation, but that's an inadvertent outcome. God works in mysterious ways

Ryza's games as they're relatively stress-free what with there not being a time limit like in the older games

Does Suikoden count? Each game is generally about a war within a single kingdom.

No. That's an example of what's in OP's image, not his post.
You end up stoping some dark god from destroying all of humanity (again, if the ruins in the desert are any indication)

Not OP but I'd love to see a JRPG that treats the most mundane shit with an equal amount of seriousness to a Xenogears game
>cook something by fighting the ingredients to prepare them
>take a shower and fight the dirt and germs off of your body
>fight sleep while you work
>final boss, you fight your boss by presenting a work seminar
It would still play like a trad JRPG, but the battle and story scenarios would be untraditional

more like
>session 1: save the kittens
>session 40: the kittens you saved in the first session is an eldritch abomination seeking to destroy the universe, they are the secret villain of the franchise and the root of all evil that have been manipulating everyone from the start and for millenium before your existence. If you don't kill them now, they will destroy your universe and all of the other universes that will ever exist.

almost every single JRPG can be done at the lowest level possible if not level 1, so no, arguably they are more a puzzle game that can be brute forced if you suck at puzzles.
