The history of videogame OSTs can be divided by being pre-Sonic Adventure, and after. There was absolutely nothing like this game's soundtrack in terms of genre diversity, scale, composition, resonance, and feeling like a true "next-gen" audio experience that you could only dream of, from a piece of cutting-edge tech out of japan (the Dreamcast). There was never another soundtrack like it, relative to where the rest of the industry was. It's tantamount to the The Wizard of Oz being the first real color movie when the rest of the industry was still in black and white. To truly appreciate this soundtrack, you simply had to be there.

"Cinematic" is a greatly overused word these days. But there is no other way to describe this game's soundtrack, or the spectacle it brought to the game all on its own. Truly a landmark moment for the industry and art form. When evaluating art, you have to consider those that were pioneers in their field, that paved the way. Sonic Adventure is the Wizard of Oz, the Space Odyssey, the Jurassic Park, the Blade Runner of video game soundtracks. And you can draw negative connotations to blockbusters, but only for the heavily derivative and diluted. You cannot deny the importance of actual landmark works, or the state that the medium was in prior to its arrival.

Sonic Adventure 1 is the most important and greatest soundtrack of all time. All contained in a 1GB disc. It couldn't be more fitting that the game released just before the new millennium, stressing even more just how out of this world this OST was.
