They say the best artists steal, but he went extra hard with it because he stole from obscure weebshit nobody played, so to them it's all new.
Most normalfags, especially game journalists wouldn't have played MOON, LIVE A LIVE, SMT II, Monster Girl Quest, SaGa Frontier, or Soul Nomad. Putting all that into a bite sized game without an anime artstyle and more LGBT content made it instant hit.
Everyone calls this the Earthbound inspired indie game, but there's less Earthbound in it than anything else.
