Next gen is shaping up like the PS2 vs Xbox gen.
Sony going for a small, cheap, weak console anybody can have access to.

Xbox are going for the big powerful box that costs an arm and a leg.

If the PS6 sells for $500 and the Xbox $1,000 then they are just gonna fail again. For starters all games will be made for the weaker PS6 anyway, so all the additional resources of the Xbox will only be used for higher Fps and resolutions. At the end we'll still be playing the same games across all platforms.

PS5/Xbox Series are trending 12 million units behind PS4/Xbox One within the same time frame. This is not due to Xbox selling a lot less since people are not moving to Sony, but ditching home consoles.
This is expected to continue into the next generation as well due to Sony and Microsoft's inability to provide system sellers.

This is true, but the leaks suggest that it could be some sort of console/PC hybrid. When people see or hear the word "PC", all of a sudden, they're ready to pay extra. Makes sense, it's a PC. If Microsoft can deliver a powerful PC for around a ~1000 bucks that handily outperforms a DIY gaming PC, and it has an intuitive UI interface/small form factor, then they might be actually able to ask that much. They'll no doubt plaster the word "PC" all over their reveal presentation on their console, and that you'll be able to do whatever popular streamer will be around in 2027.

How do they offset the costs then? Consoles usually sell at a loss and make up the difference with licensing costs/subscriptions. The assumption would be that if they're doing some sort of PC/console hybrid then you'd be able to switch from an Xbox Rog Ally Windows 11-esque mode to a console mode. As it is apparently on the Xbox Rog Ally side of things it's using a heavily trimmed down W11, so I imagine they'd just repeat that for the new Xbox.

The W11 mode would have the whole PC setup that pushes the Microsoft Store and maybe allows you to throw on Steam or other launchers but is kept limited so you can't hack the thing or anything easily while the Xbox mode would grant you access to the Xbox ecosystem and all the games that work on that. Considering they refused to make all Xbox games work natively on the XRA despite being $1000 and it's strictly a PC handheld I doubt they'd ever allow PC to run stuff like Lost Odyssey natively or through a translation layer until the Xbox was well and truly dead to justify people staying with GamePass and their ecosystem of purchases.

It's a device that would allow people to take advantage of Xbox's multiplayer servers and backwards compatible games along with their library of 20+ years while also having access to a PC that should theoretically be able to run Steam or other PC stuff albeit in a locked down way. Many people do not want to touch PC because it's too convoluted or troubleshoot-y which is why the Steam Deck has taken off even with casuals. The Xbox Rog Ally has a custom version of W11 that basically throws you into a special frontend with no desktop or anything that lets you access the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and GamePass games, so I imagine it would be like that which would be braindead simple and impossible to mess up for the casual end user.

If the price is truly $800-$1500 like the rumors are stating it's going to be it's basically dead in the water. If it's essentially an Xbox Rog Ally but with a console mode you can switch to that's something the XRA should have been, not a standalone console. I'm still baffled the XRA can't play Xbox games, that's like the #1 thing everyone wanted.

I have a very hard time seeing Magnus being a success. It sounds like it offers all the downsides of consoles, none of the advantages, and potentially pretty pricey. People will either buy a PS6 or just go ahead and go and buy a PC. Also, I see along people sticking with PS5 and not even upgrading to PS6 if they already have one.

Casual audiences believe emulation is illegal and immoral. The casual audience is not going to grab BIOSes, source games, and so on. As it is people find sourcing the easiest things to find on Google like NES games an impossibility even if they do get over those hang ups. Xbones can only play BC games released specifically when the Xbone was out. They eventually phased out Xbone getting any more BC titles and instead started doing stuff for the Series systems which have exclusive BC games for them that can't be played on the Xbone. Since GTA 6 is releasing in 2026, we can conclude that the 10th generation consoles are NOT releasing in 2026. Rockstar (and other developers) already know the expected release dates of the new consoles. GTA 6, like GTA 5, was strategically developed to maximize sales on an outgoing generation of consoles and get another revenue boost with an "enhanced" edition of the game on the new consoles.

So, what's most likely going to happen is that Rockstar will release GTA 6 on the Xbox Series and the PS5, then a year or so later they'll come out with a "next-gen" version for full price in 2027 with the launch of the new consoles.

I no longer care about Xbox products or anything Microsoft made. I have owned a Series X since launch and it has been my main console since. The $30 Gamepass price made me rethink being an Xbox gamer. I've been one since the OG big boy. Their prices keep going up and their first party offerings keep going down. I do not care for Fortnite whatever pass or freebies in f2p games. I do not play live service slop.
I enjoyed Avowed, I enjoyed South of Midnight, I enjoy their single player offerings, I do not play Overwatch 2, Diablo 4, or Fallout 76, or any CoD garbage.
The only game from them I am looking forward to right now is Clockwork Revolution. Wasteland 3 is in my top 5 games of all time and I very much so trust the developers of inXile to make a great game. But I will buy the game on Steam.

I have transitioned off of Windows and away from Microsoft products entirely. I run CachyOS on my desktop now and it's been going good for 2 weeks now. I will keep my Xbox to play my physical games but I will no longer buy any products for it.

In some cases it's rudimentary, like having RT reflections here and there and nothing else. In other cases it's impressive use of RTGI that defines the whole overall look of a game and it's pretty impressive in its own right even though newer PCs can obviously go way beyond it.

Not really, they're somewhat different but headed in the same direction. End result is both will be third parties and both will shift how they develop games. Sony will drop their western studios and focus on eastern studios and outsourcing their older ips as a shift back to AA development, Microsoft will gut most of their studios, shift to outsourcing for both current and older ips, and use the money makers to aid in bringing back older ips but most if not all of their games are shifting back to AA. I personally really like this for how clean it is and the range of prices in the guess. There's the cost of the console and how Playstation could price it, either for a low, medium or high margin. But high-price consoles do not historically sell well. It would be a bad idea for Sony to sell the Playstation 6 at a really high price.

Just based on vibes, I think most interested early adopters of the PS6 would be happy with a $600 PS6. It would induce a lot of demand for it. At $700, I think you're risking a stalled launch that would require price cuts 6 to 12 months after launch. Xbox is selling a lot less, but people are also not getting into consoles. I say not getting into, because I think that's where the deficit is happening. New adopters are not coming into the console ecosystem rather than people ditching consoles. However, the Switch still sold 150M units and the PS5 has sold 80M units. And the PS5 generation has been the most profitable gen for Sony ever. Clearly, these are still worthwhile and meaningful products for both Nintendo and Sony, even if total number of hardware units sold is trending downwards.

Steam Deck 2 has no hope at all unless it's sold at all major stores in the same electronics section as the Nintendo and Sony sections. Even if it got that same luxury it would be equivalent to a Meta Quest 3 section which is dick all because Valve has no physical copies, Valve has no accessories, Valve basically has nothing but that specific system to advertise to window shoppers and it would be as forgotten as Best Buy's Rog Ally kiosks. Nintendo has Amiibos, third-party controllers, licensed MicroSD cards, physical games, multiple variations of their system, both Switch 1 and Switch 2, first-party accessories, eShop cards, DLC expansion cards, etc. Sony has first and third-party controllers, physical games, digital game cards, first-party accessories, and typically a discount section.

Prebuilt PCs cost a minimum of $800 if they want anything more than a Chromebook at Walmart or Best Buy and people will be cheaping out because that's a huge chunk of change which is the entire reason why people do not get into PC gaming in the first place.

The reality of the situation is that most people would have a PS6. They might get a Switch 2 if they have kids or are more into games than the average normalfag. PC gaming is off the table unless this person is an actual enthusiast and that includes the Steam Deck.
Steam is popular to people who already know of video gaming and even then the average everyday normalfag very likely has a huge Playstation library and going to Steam means starting over for the same games which they will not find worth it, especially on an SD

If this sounds weird, it is. Covid's impact still lingers. The price of the PS5 keeps going up. It's not a very affordable option if Playstation can't bring its price down. But since inflation has mostly stopped, maybe it could in time.

Still, I think Playstation would rather bring people over to the PS6 than the PS5. If the PS6 does have a cheaper "S" version, that seems like the hardware to push for price conscious consumers. Assuming there's not another pandemic, inflation stays in check, and trade wars don't flare up, the price of the PS6 "S" could be brought down over time, like consoles used to be able to do, and be an even more affordable option by the early 2030s.

I think it just depends how greedy Sony wants to be.

A PS6 handheld only $100 more than the Switch 2, sounds about right. A PS6 home console for $100 more than that sounds doable as well. But if Sony is greedy, they could price it higher. I just think with the overall decline of the console userbase, it would be a dumb idea to keep the entry point of getting into a PS6 high, especially since the way Playstation makes money is from the PS+ subscriptions and MTX. It's not from the selling the consoles.

Take Nintendo. In Japan, they're probably selling the Switch 2 at a loss. It's going for almost a $100 cheaper there. Why the price difference? Because Japan is Nintendo's base and they want people to adopt the Switch 2. They're willing to lose money on hardware sales in Japan to ensure there is a future generation of Nintendo fans there.

If Sony prices the PS6 too high, it could ruin the start of the next generation for them and I don't think there's room for error. If either Nintendo or Playstation fuck up a generation at this point, I don't know if they can recover.

Xbox is 100% done with disks. They were already trying to pull back from physical years ago and they even released an all digital SeX when they did the refresh a year or two back. Their new games aren't even on the disk anymore like Starfield and Indiana Jones.

Most big box stores don't even have an Xbox section anymore, or it's so small it only has like six games and no consoles at all. My local Best Buys don't carry the consoles, just a clearance section and CoD. My local Walmarts have the consoles but only a small section for CoD, Fifer, Madden, NBA2K, and maybe one or two discount games. I'll use an extreme example. In 1970, the cheapest computer you could buy would cost you like $5000. Today, you could buy a chomebook for $100. Typically, the cost and therefore price of technology decreases over time.

Normally, without worldwide pandemics and trade wars, consoles dropped in price over time. The PS5 and the Switch haven't. (The Xbox series did experience a brief period of lower prices a few years ago, and despite recent official price hikes, the Xbox series are being discounted heavily at some retailers, probably because they know its dead weight.) But in real terms, they have. $500 in 2025 is not $500 in 2020. That's a consequence of Covid and Inflation.

The PS6 will be launching in 2027, years after Covid, but during potential trade wars between the US and China. That's something Playstation could account for by making the PS6 affordable. If Playstation wanted to make the PS6 affordable, all it would need to do is make it weaker. But with newer technology, which the PS5 Pro doesn't really have, it could still be more powerful for less cost.

Additionally, who would be unhappy if the PS6 ended up being more powerful and priced lower than the PS5 Pro? Only the idiots that bought the PS5 Pro and they'll just go out and buy the PS6 anyways cause they're idiots.

The problem is that people already think the $450 for a Switch 2 is fairly unconscionable and it caused a massive uproar over the pricing. $600 would feel like suicide to most people, especially since no other system has ever been that much since the original PS3 which people already did not buy at that price and PS5 Pros/SeX systems are having a harder time selling than Slims, Disk PS5s, and SeS.

Oh for sure it's trending that way, but I don't see it until PS7 era and I think Nintendo will be the only one to keep it up past that for maybe one or two more generations. I sincerely doubt that just because having an extra SKU you have to buy optionally for the base system and stock will lead to sales that make it untenable to make physical copies at all as you can't count on anyone having it anymore. With the PS5 if I remember right disk PS5s are on par with Slims since they cost basically the same. B&Ms would also find it hard to justify making huge sections for the brands anymore which would hit their ability to advertise if they pulled something like that.

I'm of the opinion it's going to be an "All at once" sort of deal where they throw us into the deep end with the PS7. Shuhei, while not being CEO anymore, said that he personally doesn't think based on his knowledge and contacts within Sony that they're stopping physical yet because we're not at a point where everyone can reasonably store games or download them and patches yet, especially in the US.

I don't think a $600 next-generation Playstation 6 would sell that much worse than what is essentially a handheld PS4.5. Of course, software matters, but just generally, I think potential early adopters of the PS6 would be fine, even happy, with a $600 PS6.

People who want the new console but typically adopt later in a console lifecycle because of affordability issues would bitch and they are some of the people bitching about the Switch 2 price. But again, the Switch 2 is selling very well.

Now, that's been the case before in past cycles and I remember people bitching about the PS5 at launch as well. But things are somewhat different these days and social media amplifies it. The way I see it, the complaints seem bigger now because of two factors:

1) The video game internet communities are now more global, where as consoles are very regional products. So, people will jump on the hate bandwagon for fun cause they can't get the console anyways.

2) A lot of "gamers" no longer play games on consoles. They play on old, used, cheap smartphones, tablets, PCs and consoles. New consoles have become a product for wealthier, older consumers, specifically in America. This leaves a lot of poorer, younger consumers, who can't get a Switch 2 at $450, a lot of time to shitpost on social media.

Valve is competing with Microsoft in terms of the Xbox Rog Ally since it is a PC handheld that comes with W11 and is directly trying to establish itself as a storefront with the exact same games Valve offers, but overall Valve is competing more with the likes of GOG and EGS than anyone else when it comes to storefronts, and MSi, Lenovo, and ASUS when it comes to PC handhelds.

The backbone of the Game Pass subscriber base is the console. With the rampant price hikes I can not see how will that be sustainable in the long term. Approximately half of the Xbox sales are Series S. That is 15 million or so users who wouldn't have bought a full priced console from MS and live off on cheap Game Pass. What Microsoft does right now guarantees they are halving their future userbase from the get go. And even the Series X users are not reliable as you may have noticed the "cancel Game Pass" stuff recently and every major streamer shitting on GP.

They can see the writing on the wall. The amount of money they have to spend into R&D for the system, then marketing, and watch it guaranteed to be the third wheel now because of the situation they've been put into likely outweighs just packing it all up. It's not like they're packing up fully, they still have their PC storefront due to GamePass and they'll likely pivot into making PC able to access the Xbox storefront and games as well in the future if their "This is an Xbox" campaign wants to actually be taken to its logical conclusion. They've also turned Xbox subscriptions into the GamePass subscriptions as a whole so all those subscribers have been functionally migrated to that system that also works on PC.

There's just no point in prolonging this further. The Series systems are what, 33 million systems to PS5's 80 million, most of those sales are from the cheap SeS and not the SeX, they are phasing out physical copies, many Japanese devs pretty much refuse to do physical releases on Xbox let alone port any games to it, all their exclusives are day one ported off giving no reason to buy the system for exclusives, going forward PS5/6 and Switch 2 will likely get physicals of their games meaning you will get shafted if you go Xbox and like physical copies losing yet another incentive for the new system, and so on.

They have no real appeal anymore. They are essentially a GamePass machine whose games are all either better on PS5 because SeX for some reason is a coin flip if multiplats are optimized better than on PS5 despite being stronger, or are going to be ported to Playstation anyway.

Series X's Gpu is as big as the PS5 Pro's Gpu but the clock runs at half the speed. The Base PS5's Gpu is only half the size of the Series X but the clock runs at twice the speed.

If there is anything this proves is that:

Early example but that was the exception not the rule, Avatar wasn't path traced and Pixar didn't do path tracing until 2013. It's kind of funny people really don't get how weak this coming hardware is, with the new changes from AMD what they are really doing is moving their architecture to something more like Nvidia, with fully dedicated RT and AI as well as data stream compression.
Here's a question, do you think that the PS6 or Xbox Magnus will be as powerful as an RTX 5090? Here's an answer, no, not even remotely, it won't even be anywhere near a match for an RTX 4090, which has more than double the SMs (CU's), but considering how far behind AMD are their RT and Tensor core equivalents may only be as effective as an RTX 40 series GPU, even the RTX 4090 can't do say Alan Wake 2 4k path traced even with DLSS turned on, and that game still has a lot of jumps to hitting full CGI quality.
This won't be the last console generation, although with console level optimization a lot of Sony published games will look like CGI, but then again Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart was already just on the cusp of it.
