I would argue that they're intrinsically tied. People place value on units because of the character attached to them. They'll try to make favorite characters work, even when they're bad.
Amelia, Nino, and Lyn are prime examples of this. If Amelia and everyone else in Sacred Stones were just generic faceless Advance Wars units, nobody would try and train up "that weak lance user at the midway point who has bad growths." Everyone would ignore her.

It isn't actually broken because you have to have it equipped the entire game from a very early level, and you have to reach a very high internal level to see noticeable effects. Meantime it isn't any better than a +2-3 version of a skill, while costing three to ten times more, and occupying a precious skill slot. I really have to wonder if you've even done this. Show me an Engage boss warp kill that don't use Canter to set up for refreshes.

Starsphere is sunk cost: the skill. Yes, if you equip it very early and never take it off, by midgame you can expect to be +2 on your averages. But now you're a booster higher in each stat, and minus one on skill slots. If you take it off now you didn't really get that much value out of a skill that costs 1500 SP AND tied up a skill slot the entire time. But you want to take it off and equip something that actually does something.
It's constantly forcing you into this catch-22. When do you actually take it off? When is it enough, and when can you equip something that actually has immediate utility?

I mean yeah. It's pretty demanding for a Lyn!Ivy. Where is all that damage supposed to come from? She averages 29 mag at IL35, which is already a very high internal level. Even if you tonic'd up and had a Bolganone with 20 might (and a hit engrave of course), that's still only 51 attack. Even if you hexed Lumera, you're still 2 short.
So what, glue Alear to her for the +3? Do a magic rally with magic-type Byleth? Maybe you have a skill that adds magic damage, or you gave her a spirit dust at some point. It's not impossible but you can see it's rather demanding, when it's easier to just crit her out with an Ike user or double with a roided up physical Roy user.
Different characters are more suited for different jobs.

The #1 combat unit is going to get more experience because it will be fighting more often and fighter the more difficult units, this will lead to a snowball effect where the unit will be even better than the rest of your team as the game goes on. That unit is also going to get the boosters and optimal reclasses because why would the #7 combat unit take precedence over the #1 combat unit?
