what the hell were they thinking making some of the unlocks borderline impossible or flat out ridiculous to unlock?
Mewtwo and game and watch was bad enough but all the trophies?

Because back then unlocking something actually meant something

This is why the unlock method for Mario Kart World is so arduous - Nintendo wants you to just unlock the characters gradually over time.

Everyone was talking about video games in person. You were bound to find someone in school who had the Game Cheats magazine with all the tips and tricks on how to unlock the missing characters.
As a fail safe all the unlockable fighters appear after a set amount of Vs Battles.
If you don't play the game, why should you unlock the contents?

Every time i tried i used DK and spammed down b, but his hitbox is so huge that enemies on higher platforms can still downtilt you. Also the game still loves to spawn exploding items on you.
I eventually unlocked it by doing the same shit only i got lucky enough to have no bombs spawn on me.

I remember having to explain to a classmate in 3rd grade how to unlock Mewtwo in Melee and it took 10 minutes for me to get it through his head that you don't have to play all 20 hours in a sitting.

I did that same thing. I got down to 1 minute and got killed, but eventually I got it down. Seeing a bomb-omb coming down on you when DK is locked in his animation is physically painful.

Cool Melee unlock facts!

If you play with friends, even casual games can get you Mewtwo unlocked before Big Blue or Pokefloats!
You don't have to get any KOs in 15 Minute Melee in order to clear it, so you can just jump around to avoid them while they're still at minimum aggression, and you can get a lot of movement practice out of it. I find it fun to do with Captain Falcon!
Trying a stage unlock behind getting a trophy can be a shitload of fuck if you're unlucky enough!

it was to sell strategy guides and the nintendo help hotline. i doubt any kid could have beat phantasy star without a guide.
