I understand this side of the argument that "games make you dumb" but also the majority of people wouldn't get anything out of reading a book, simply because the average IQ is so low. Having that said, he's not being very smart himself trying to claim that one form of entertainment is superior to another. The reality is that games are much more of a higher stimulant than a book ever will be, but a book can offer insights that games rarely do. Doesn't mean that one is "better" than the other, it just means that they're different. People always have to pick a side and die on a hill when really it's just a dumb way of identifying yourself with a concept that has nothing to do with you, really.

Besides, if he had ingested anything from his books he would understand this himself and probably find a more efficient way of converting people to read books than trying to be an asshat. Had he been smart, he would have been kind to people who appreciated Trevor and his acting through that character and said "listen, trevor is a funny character and all but there are so many characters you can find in books who are equally interesting, and you'll end up learning a thing or two."

I was trying to match his tone, and besides I'm spit-balling. I'm saying IF he really wanted to go down that road of 'superiority', he should know that it won't help to do it aggressively. Literally nothing to gain from it other than vilifying the GTA community.

Lowkey I feel bad for him cause he was a rising actor and saw GTA as a chance to make it big, but instead he became a typecast and is forever associated with the character of Trevor Philips. The most ironic part being he isn't even a gamer and never played GTA V.
>>723036678
Yeah I think he has some good things on his mind, but the way he says it just sounds totally obnoxious. He's definitely tired of being seen as Trevor Philips and not Steven Ogg and wanted to be a big acting star instead, but he really has this huge sense of superiority when he speaks his mind.

Well put. Truly the apples and oranges comparison, it's why when games decide to rely heavily upon the story and plot that I roll my eyes. There is no way a game can stand up to books in the way of narrative. "The name of the game is in the game" a wise man once said, even Carmack understood that.
Ogg is weird in the fact that almost every other celeb of his stature and above seem to be able to cope with it. I mean Harrison Ford must have gotten/still gets everyone and their mom coming up to him expecting Han or Indy or something and he seems to be over it. You're telling me that he had so many people come up to him that he resents the fame, doesnt make any sense to me. Honestly the fact that he wanted the mo-cap and design of the character so close to what he looks like makes it mostly his own fault. To be fair though there aren't many other performances like his in video games so it almost has to recognizable.

i've been an avid reader for about 12 years now and i've gamed my entire life. I can assure you all that reading has jack shit to do with intellect and the Trevor actor is just being a fag. i unironically believe that video games have more to offer you by teaching you critical thinking and training you to make quick calculated decisions especially if you play games against other highly skilled players in a competitive setting.

The shittiest thing about books is that they require a lot of time to read and process in your mind if you actually want to retain the information you've learned, if you don't than you just forget the entire book you've read in a few days unless it was a really good book, which is rare.

"Read books" is an overrated meme spouted by people who just learned to read.
I've read books my entire life but in my experience there are countless books that's as much of a terribly written time-wasting slop as AAA goyslop video games, and vague recommendation of "just read books" is a terrible advise.
There are good books sure but they haven't helped my life outside of it being entertaining, it's no different from movies, anime or video games, only thing it does is make you feel better for being able to read words.

Setting aside how difficult it is to place literary value on any one piece of media to begin with, good characters and stories can come from any medium. Just because books are literary, and thus more likely to be able to directly inform someone of what a character is thinking, doesn't mean it's inherently better or worse than anything else.

You are wrong. All the best movies are adaptations of books because they are acknowledging the written text of it is superior to anything they alone could come up with or create in isolation. They are taking the superior form and adding photography and music to it because thats all they have to contribute, they know the written form is the distilled apex of story.

True, but books from antiquity and the medieval period are worth their weight in gold to this day. The problem with a lot of modern writers (of the last 200 or so years) is that they really speak in terms of their contemporary period, whereas ancient and medieval authors, while speaking of their current age, spoke of things that were timeless and in timeless ways. Doystoyevsky and Tolkein aren't as great as people make them out to be, but the Illiad, the Odyssey and the philosophical works of Aristotle, Plato and the other intellectual descendants of Socrates are the very heartbeat of Western Christian civilization. That being said, math, engineering and the hard/soft sciences will be timeless just by their very subject matter and great materials to learn from and a good reprieve from wordiness for a bit to more focused literature.

Add to that GTAV not even being that complex of a game to even get into in the first place. It's not like an RTS or a space flight sim where you literally have to do a training course to learn the essentials. It's basically just a free-roam, interactive play that while there's an over-arching narrative, you have control of the finer details.

I can't see why that sort of game is lesser than a book when they accomplish the same thing but in different ways. The boomer mentality of games being toys for kids really outs retarded insecure faggots for what they are: boys LARPing as men.

A guys memoirs, written from his in-universe perspective. The world is insane, as is the prose. A lot of the fun besides that is in finding out why things happen the way they do, because the narrator himself often does not know, does not want you to know, or writes it in a way easily understood by natives of his world, but hard to get by us.
If you want something more accessible by the author pick up fifth head of cerberus. It is a lot shorter and is a single book, instead of a 4(5) parter that is meant to be read multiple times to really become the 10/10 experience.

That being said I don't subscribe to the fan idea that he lies at any point. He leaves out things, he misdirects, he pushes you into directions, but he does not lie.

>There is no way a game can stand up to books in the way of narrative.
This is such a shallow understanding of storytelling. Books cannot tell a story the same way a game can. It is literally impossible. Video games through their interactivity have a unique way to tell a story that no other medium can truly replicate. Video games are infants compared to books movies etc give them time to catch up.
