Well, I guess let me clarify - I like FFV a lot, I have a playthrough going right now near the end of world 1. I wish it was turn based - in magic wish land it would be CT like FFT to preserve the aspect of agility/time magic impacting turn economy. Any FF past X has kind of been shit for me.

I like the jobs more in FFV than I do FFT. I never played FFT until this remaster. I heard how much people love the job system. I'm disappointed in it because of how many jobs feel useless on their own. I really dislike that style. A job should be good all on its own, but made better with cross-classing. I'm sure FFT will have some great combos later on, but it sucks that only the magic jobs and monk feel good on their own at the moment.

Anonymous No.723045621 >>723045656
The meta of FF5 renders a lot of jobs to be pretty lousy, though. If you want to challenge by choosing jobs that will make the game harder than yeah, I get that. But if you're just doing a regular playthrough?

Everyone needs to reach level 3 monk because then you can make any class fight barehanded and do decent damage and save a shit ton of money not buying weapons or armor they can't even equip. Step 2 - buy a fuckton of elemental rods at Karnak. Only black mages can equip rods in battle and use them by breaking them against enemies and bosses, and breaking rods trivializes virtually every single boss fight in the game all the way up to the point of reaching the Merged World after defeating Exdeath for the first time. Seriously, it's a free 2000 damage per rod, it's a no-brainer. The only exceptions are bosses that you can render worthless with gil toss, like with the Pyro enemies that cast Arise, the crystals in the forest, etc. A mastered Samurai can learn slash and that takes care of fucking everything up until reaching the very last area where Exdeath is for the final battle, since it doesn't work on dragon and heavy types.

I liked XVI's take on the crystals being straight up bad for once, where magic just wasn't going to be good for the world in the long run and that Clive so believed that the world could still be a beautiful place worth living in afterward.

It's just a shame that the Eikon forms don't feel different enough to make combat feel like it's evolving, it stagnates a third of the way into the game, and that goes double for the lack of enemy variety. As soon as I played Stranger of Paradise I realized just how disappointing XVI's combat system was. Even more so when I had the most fun ever with VII Rebirth's combat.

I think it was fine to explore that for just one game in the entire series. The crystals aren't even in some of the other games at all, and in most games they're more neutral in that they're powerful, but the world depends on who's wielding them. I love IV's silly approach where it just keeps throwing more and more crystals to keep the chase going. "Oh, there's actually dark crystals, too, don't worry, Golbez didn't get all of them". Then it's "Oh, we meant to tell you the fucking MOON has crystals, too". Then in V the crystals are a temp agency.

Or each job was its own sphere grid that you slot together like Diablo IV's Paragon Boards. Linking boards together that aren't your main board gives stat bonuses but you have to progress the grid through one board to access another one that's linked to it. So say you get your first job and slot it to the upper part of your starting board, then, when you get another job, you can either slot it to the left/right/lower link to gain immediate access to it, or slot it to one of the three open sections of the first job you placed to make use of the bonuses it gives to whatever job(s) gets linked to it.

That's pretty horseshit, anon. You'll get tons of useful spells just playing the game. You may have to use your brain for a bit to get the defensive ones that you see enemies cast on themselves, but using a Beastmaster to control them isn't exactly a huge brain required move. You'll miss out on some of them, sure.

So then it's turn based - only plus the extra tedium of starting at nothing for extended periods of time between turns.

Good work, surely nobody saw that.

It fulfills a point of making speed matter, but does it in a way that's just clumsy/boring. Wasted time between turns, uninteresting boss gimmicks, shit like that. FFX/FFT had a much better implementation of the good parts of ATB without the bad.

You're mad about an offhand reference in FFT when this was the entire crux of Faris' character in the game this thread is about. Ironic.

V sucks and it's job system is mostly useless. Any other FF game with a job system is automatically superior because V is mediocre.

Great game but it doesn't have anything like a job system. It has a ton of characters with their own unique movesets.
