what's with zoomers needing achievements to play old games? i don't get it

They all have ADHD and need immediate gratification or they get bored.

I would be retro achievements is used way more by older people than younger.

A friend of mine who's stuck in time and won't ever play anything older than the late 00s loves it.

Zoomers don't care about achievements because they mainly play F2P and mobile games. Achievements are a mainly millennial thing because they were kids when the concept was introduced with 360 and PS3.

a very concise tl;dr is that pokemon clover, 4chan made pokemon firered romhack that was one of the most requested games on the site, was finally about to receive an achievement set. then some people (including the admin of the cutting room floor, iykyk) started a movement to get the game banned.
everyone on the staff didn't want it banned, so they released a statement saying they would allow everything that wasn't straight up illegal. those people got really mad and started sending threats to the staff, including the site's founder who was very hands-off. the founder got scared and overruled the admins decision, releasing a new statement (less than a day after the first one) saying they would not allow ""offensive"" content anymore, banned clover, and other games too.
a bunch of staff and longtime contributors quit, because the founder essentially caved to a vocal minority that was sending threats.
also one mod (the one who wrote the pastebin text) got doxxed because he was in favor of not banning clover, and received threats using photos of his newborn child (yes, really). the only way for someone to get access to that kind of info would be if they were on the admin channels on their plebcord, in other words there's a traitor among the admins
basically the site fucking imploded because the founder caved to doxxing threats from a small vocal minority who didn't want pokemon clover (a pokemon hack with 4chin humor) on the site

RA and emulation is more of a Millennial thing.

That said, achievements are nice in games if they incentivize players to do more shit or complete some challenges they wouldn't otherwise do. Shit achievements are when the game's littered with mandatory ones that you just amass the whole game without trying, like beating each chapter of a game and having each party member join.
As an added bonus, achievements (in theory) help you play a game for longer and explore it deeper, giving you more bang for your buck.
Where a $60 game might normally be beaten in 15 hours and be a complete waste of your time and money, an achievement to complete the "uber death megadungeon" on the hardest difficulty might mean you end up spending the next week practicing and doing optional content to bulk up your skills and your characters and git gud to finally beat the dungeon.

2) It's more just a general excuse to get people to try to play a game. Look at the Achievement of the Week. Look at the Play This Set section in the newsletter. They're not actually any challenges or talking about the set, it's just a general recommendation or lead-in to play the game and then talk about it/share with others. That's just how it goes: people are more likely to talk about something when there's at least some basis of general agreement for it to be a recent topic, otherwise it's all just arbitrary and people often don't pay attention to one thing over another, making it difficult to start a convo about it.

A person got very mad that a game called "Pokemon Clover" was allowed on RetroAchievements. They threatened to tell everyone to leave the site if it wasn't removed. The website's bosses, especially the founder named Scott, got scared of these threats. In fact a lot of people openly disliked them back in the day because they weren't really achievements in the sense you did something worth earning something but rather a checklist for story progression.
