I want to blame other people, but the real problem is the report button. If you couldn't report other players, then nobody would be able to report me. So, the biggest cancer in my opinion is being able to punish other players.

Standardization and homogenization.

Gaming has a bad case of "everything evolves into a crab" because a few game ideas rise to the top and completely dominate the gaming space while everything else gets labeled "clunky/weird/dated" etc. I'm not saying you can't learn from other games, but the amount of fucking roguelike/metroidvania/soulslike etc shit has gotten ridicolous. Its fine to throw out the rulebook sometimes, do something different, even if it doesn't work. At this point I'd rather take a 7/10 that's doing something different than a 9/10 that's just the same ideas and concepts we've seen a thousand times.

Unfortunately true, and I think the ultimately shittiest thing about the Wii era is that it left gamers really allergic to the idea of video games changing in any meaningful way. Everyone got way too comfortable with how things are. I can't believe gyro aim and back paddles aren't a standard thing on controllers yet, even though they literally only add more options

I wouldn't say cancer but what definitely did the most damage to videogames was shareholders. Nothing has been as damaging as the shareholder-owned companies prioritizing "safe" franchises, shutting down all sorts of studios for short-term gains, redirecting some of the studios to work on the safe franchises, pumping tons of money into the safe franchises for near-guaranteed returns and generally prioritizing extracting as much money as possible out of games instead of making fun games that sell naturally. You can go to Wikipedia pages about how many IPs are owned by companies like Microsoft and EA and then note how many of them are not getting any new entries. Lots of studios that let themselves be purchased for the financial security that a publisher would afford eventually got problems once shareholders decided to meddle a lot more into their development processes, and this is why a lot of the creativity is now in indie games without much budget.
