You can still fail tricks in a sense kind of, though probably a glitch. There's times where you'll have enough air to do one last trick but you'll make contact with the ground. You don't lose speed but you don't get a boost either. There's a bit on Metal Harbor where it happens to me pretty regularly. Right after the fork at the start rejoins. Right turn into a jump on a raised platform. So many times I'll get a trick but instantly hit the floor and not boost.

I do miss risk boosts. Also couldn't regular land drifting evade homing items too?
