We've never needed ray tracing to enjoy good looking games before. Dunno why we need it now. Maybe I'm too poor to understand why people are willing to spend $1000+ for a single component just for lighting.

I was at a friends house some time ago, and he was bragging about his new at the time 4070. while he went to the bathroom, i disabled the raytracing in the game we were playing, and it took like 50 minutes for him to notice.

RTX 5080 is a terrible buy because its only 10% faster than 9070XT/5070Ti/FlashedNavi48 while being $300-400 more expensive on average.

people did fake raytracing back then. half life 2 is the ultimate example. the devs spent hours baking the lights in raytraced mode and converted it to toaster friendly equivalents thats not raytraced but still retains the look of it.
