Linux is fine but lately Android is complete fucking dogshit, it all started with Google began to lock down the FUCKING file system, it's only going to get worse when they crack down on side loading next year. I really hope someone makes a chinkheld-focused (i.e. ARM) fork of Linux or future chinkhelds just use Proton, it's dependent on how good Proton ARM gets in the next couple years.

Android was always garbage and locked down. Most flavors of Android manage to make it worse.
Android only got worse in the sense that they for at least 5 versions don't know how they could improve the system and just randomly change shit.
Unfortunately, Linux on ARM hardware isn't without its issues either.

Android is currently making quite some leaps in terms of making Proton and all those compatibility layers work. It already surpasses Portmaster in sheer numbers of compatible games (though it only works on some SoC)

Much more comfortable and higher quality buttons on average.

It's both, Android is shit at keeping apps alive and RA is set wrong, good practice to run paranoid save states for that and other reasons. Also check that it's periodically writing Save RAM instead of only on exit, fucking autistic aliens had it default to the latter at one point.

Personally, I wouldn't bother buying verticals so similar and instead save up for a big leap like the RPClassic.

And GG. Pixel aspect ratio NES, PCE and SNES with minimal overscan all work out great, 3x integer GBA at 3.4" too, and I often end up playing native 4:3 at 3.5" on it anyway because the controls feel right. Its weakness is ports with poor resolution control and/or scaling.

Also, that is simply not true, phones introduce a lot of brand new rendering issues from the absolute mess of their GPUs. To say nothing of how much laggier that build plays. When, or rather -if- the new project takes off and is well maintained, you'll have a point.

If you're thinking of getting a Retroid Pocket 5, hold off for a while, this is around the time of year they announce their next one, and they seem to have just started a stock clearance.
You'll either get a RP6 that can run mid-tier PS3 and a chunk of oldgen PC based off of it's leaked CPU (screen unconfirmed as of now), or a cheaper RP5 if they fuck it up since the goycattle will upgrade anyways.

Im telling you that its in a good state right now and again next week there is actual current PCSX2 port coming too. My phone has SD865 and 99% of games run fine I even completed Dirge of Cerberus on it. Only games that i had issues with are Sly 2 and 3 due to performance in some spots but I just used Vita3k with 60fps patch and both run fine there instead.

What issues. Black eyes in Jak games? Fixed. Missing effects in shit ton of games? Fixed too you can disable em for performance through using disable readbacks, snowblind games fixed too. Not much for now, they run a few versions late. Might be bad news for companies that partnered up with Qualcomm and are bragging about using newer chips, like Ayn/Retroid and Ayaneo, but regardless there won't be any change from their end like enabling root by default as that would prevent most mobage from running and these kids are a significant market domestically. The most immediate problem will be the mass dev exodus, and how the situation will deteriorate further as Google enacts the next steps.

This is false. Yeah. Always go for Snapdragon/SoCs with Adreno GPUs. Adreno GPUs have custom drivers which makes massive difference not just custom drivers but default ones are supported a ton better by emulators. Mali GPUs are ass due to that and even modern models lack some features like dual source blending which is big for PS2 emulation for example. They also dont suppory modern Vulkan stuff still unlike Adreno.

N64 can be deceptively demanding, plus it performs worse on Linux versus Android running the same chip since apparently there's no multithreading for it. Reliable N64 starts at $150 as the Linux offerings are rather weak and the $80 something Androids are too slow to be worth getting. But then at $150 you're kinda cucked out of PS2 and GC for only $50 more and, well, see how this works?

Yes and no. If Switch is his main concern, he's still better getting a chipped one and overclocking than, say, spending $400 something on an Odin to still have stutters and not great performance for value.

PC on chinkheld is still in it's infancy because it's only just start to come across via Linux + Winlator a few months ago, even if it is making huge leaps since the chinkheld space is moving faster than a speeding bullet with yearly generational jumps.
Retroid Pocket 5 is the current big dog everyone is focused on but is about one hardware generation out of date and starting to feel it, but the recent Konkr Pocket Fit can run Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite at 60fps so should be able to crush early 2000's. Give it a while, the current batch of hardware are what'll run low-end PC and are still going through their releases, and part of the benefit of chinkhelds is the glut of choice you get from an oversaturated market.

Otherwise I would recommend just biting the bullet on a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro because that's the cheapest option you've got that meets the venn diagram of "can be had easily", "is high quality," and "runs N64 games."

Though I would actually look at that AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini since it's pretty much the Retroid Pocket 2S, king of budget handhelds and cruelly killed by Retroid before its time.

I want one so bad but they're way too expensive. I can buy two chinkhelds for that price. The only reason it went into production is because the Xperia Play patent expired. Excited for Chink clones of this thing in every size and layout you could want. Unfortunately because of the phone market's obsession with thin phones with a massive camera bump there will never be a perfect controller like this. I don't get it either. Just make the phone flat on the back, include a thicker battery to fill in that void.
Right now I use the GameSaar G8+ which is extremely comfy and nice, plus it has gyro for Switch 2. Find myself using it more on the Switch 2 than my phone tho and just playing retro games on my Miyoo Mini Plus or Retroid 4 Pro. I'm so temped by >>723088783 this thing. 960p makes integer scaling flawless on all the consoles I care about. It seems nearly perfect. And early benchmarks show it playing all the gamecube games I care about at full speed and 2x in some cases (just not shit like Rogue Squadron of course). Actually, Retroid has a track record of chinking out basically every other device. Scamming RP3 owners while the much superior RP3+ was in production and would release shortly, Flip 1 hinges getting busted out of the gate, RP4/Pro launching with faulty shoulder springs, the RPMini v1 scandal where they took a 31:27 OLED screen, covered it up and sold it as 4:3 but also fucked up the math and missed pixels on the target resolution so it completely fucked up the image, unable to fix it in software and instead being forced to quietly offer replacement front panels during a very limited time so not many people would learn it. And how they gave the RP5 more RAM after demand during the reveal but left the Mini as is.

That said, love me RP2S, simple as.

https://bitbuilt.net/forums/threads/investigating-the-retroid-pocket-minis-display.6845/

When they could have just been upfront so the thing wouldn't have looked as goofy with the massive wasted space top and bottom that caught flak on reveal AND scooped up all the people looking for a major upgrade to the 1:1 chinkhelds, when at the time the only other device using that OLED was a stupidly overpriced Ayaneo vertical.

No, you're thinking of the 476H, which is over $100 cheaper. 477M handles upscaled GC/PS2 without breaking a sweat.
>LCD screen
You say that to make it sound rubbish, but apart from the fact that it's a very nice panel for an LCD, you also deliberately leave out the fact that it's a 120hz display which means it's actually fantastic for retro gaming because it can do either black frame insertion or CRT beam simulation.

So OP is actually right, it's a perfect example of how far retro handhelds have come, as the only downside left on that system is the inline triggers, which should be replaced with flared triggers like on the 476H. After that, it becomes a literally perfect PS2-and-below system.

Nope, my money was on the pricier Anbernig of the year, even if the price I listed was for the more expensive 12GB RAM model (8GB is about 40 bucks less, I believe?). In a landscape where for a little bit less you can get another device that was released this year with a 16:9 OLED display, mounting a Snapdragon chipset for which the emulation scene is already more mature than the Dimensity line (the Retroid Pocket 5), this is less a "paragon of how far we've come" and more of the latest iteration of a specialized device line for those who are specifically looking to consume 4:3-aspect-ratio content up until that PS2/GC ballpark.
>>723108746
Again, it is a matter of time until the emulation front becomes more mature, but at this moment the Dimensity chiptet line doesn't have the support it has for upper handheld emulation than what, say, the Turnip drivers supply for Snapdragon-based devices. Surely we're heading there in the coming months for how many Batocera forks are being made for each of these chinkhelds.

All down to the core you're using. Yabasanshiro is less accurate and compatible, but considerably faster, a must for low-end systems and the only way an H700 device runs even the most basic 2D Saturn games at an acceptable framerate. Beetle core is highly accurate but very demanding.

NGL I tried playing Monster Hunter Stories 1 on a 2DS a few months back and that thing ran at like 15 FPS. Playing on an emulator might not be "accurate", but it's certainly better from a performance perspective, and having control over the when/where/how you play your games is a huge boon.

That's clearly 2:1 scaling and not 3:2 interger scaling. You're stretching the pixels unevenly. With interger scaling one screen would be exactly 3x native resolution and the second slightly smaller screen would be 2x native resolution side by side. All chinkhelds with a 720p screen would benefit from this because games would look sharper.

If neither of the above, I'd say easily, but I know that VNs have major compatibility issues because japs are retard codelets. Recent hardware grade outings are about there, and because Google is shitting up android they're all starting to viably dualboot Linux / emulate Windows environments too. The space is growing fast, so I'd just say leave it for a few months for now; if Retroid Pocket 6 is anything that the leaks mention it'll be an ideal microcomputer for practically anything low-grade.
