for how long has real time combat been a thing in crpg?
always thought it was turn based only, but now i'm playing deadfire,
it has real time combat and it feels a bit weird

It feels weird because of the inactive time. In a real time kombat you'd expect them to be flinging shit at each other constantly but instead it looks like they're facing off to throw a punch, then wait 3 seconds for the next one
Wtf are you waiting for? catching your breath after one swing?
It's a compromise they made to allow both systems to coexist, not realtime but streamlined turns where speed is measured in milliseconds between the next action. Very, very disrespectful

If you want something with real-time combat that doesn't feel "weird", try Arcanum. They swing their shit as fast as humanly possible like in Diablo and you can barely react to some of the fights that break out and there's no pause as well so you have to just dog it out. If you walk into a gunfight, you ARE getting shot to death if you don't think about how you approach it. The combat system is actually cool enough: just don't play it in turn-based.
