I think it comes down to nuanced characters built layer by layer by every line of dialogue and exposition.
Kris, Susie, and Noelle are so multifaceted and it's accomplished in like 1/50th of the time it takes a typical JRPG to do the entire arc of a character.
Realistically most of the potential of Deltarune is in character interactions/relationships. The Knight is cool mainly because their identity and motivation relative to their identity will necessarily shape the plot itself.
Then there's two-three wildcards: Gaster, Forgotten Man and the Human SOUL. Gaster/Forgotten Man are Chekhov's Guns for now mostly but very few games have ever done what Deltarune is doing with the soul, and I think Deltarune has done it way more interestingly than those other games (eg OFF).

Ralsei knows that we're controlling Kris and has gone out of his way to play along for us, but there's no reason to think he's doing it because he wants to. His whole breakdown at the end of Chapter 4 was about how stressed he feels having to play his role in the Prophecy and pretend to be smiling and strong, both to support Susie and Kris and because he knows he's being watched by some all-powerful demon possessing his friend and they can't save the world without keeping us happy.

Asriel's purpose in the plot is to be Asgore's dead son that drives him to be the villain because he can't move on. Hearing Carol's voice clearly in the Weird Route ending is just confirmation that she has Kris's number and would make a casual vaguely threatening phone call in the dead of night, in case you somehow hadn't figured out yet that they're conspiring together.
The static/distortion effect on the other phone calls may or may not be something that's actually part of the story or just done for dramatic effect, but if it is real it could easily be her using a voice changer to conceal her identity because she knows that You are listening. She doesn't need to do this in the Weird Route ending because even though the context is obviously sinister, she's technically just acting in her role as Noelle's mother ahead of her date with Kris at the Festival tomorrow.

It's possible that she didn't personally/entirely blame Asgore for what happened, Rudy certainly doesn't. She might blame herself more than anyone. My personal theory is that Dess stole the codes to the Bunker from her parents (and got Kris to steal whichever ones Toriel and Asgore might have had) which is how they got in and she disappeared, but that's just speculation. Asgore getting fired could be more of a result of him becoming genuinely dysfunctional and unable to perform his duties, and coming off as crazy/obsessed to the townsfolk in general if he directly encountered the Dark World in the Bunker as it seems like he might have.
In their current position, Asgore is a powerless but useful pawn for Carol. I'm actually not convinced that Carol's in on the Knight's plan. I do think she knows about the Dark Worlds, and is actively working with Asgore to investigate them further, with the primary goal of finding Dess. It's possible that she's working with Kris too, to some degree, for the same reasons.

However, a lot of it cycles back to Susie's involvement. The theory I ascribe to is that Susie is being set up intentionally by Kris to be the Girl in the prophecy as a replacement to Noelle, as a more viable sacrifice (the Girl is implied to suffer a grim fate judging from the last prophecy panel reaction and the Sword Route dialog, Susie is the odd one out in Hometown being new and unfriendly with everyone initially, and now that she and Kris are friends, Kris is stuck choosing his new friend or keeping his promise with the Knight on fulfilling the prophecy). Weird Route, therefore, is us forcing Kris to take up Noelle as the Girl, instead, as was probably originally intended.

If Carol knew about the prophecy, and the stipulation that love has to find its way to the Girl, I doubt she'd want Noelle to get involved, and would probably actively sabotage any romantic interest she'd have with both Susie and Kris, at least until the prophecy is fulfilled. But she doesn't seem to mind Noelle dating Kris, just Susie, and that's easy to understand as from her perspective, Susie's just some passing crush that's all rough and tumble, while she's known Kris for probably his entire life. I can see Carol's discrimination of Susie for wanting Noelle to be with Kris as paralleling Kris initially deciding that Susie should take Noelle's place as the Girl, both for the same general reasoning of Susie's apparent initial demeanor. Carol's actions in Chapter 4 could otherwise be completely coincidental, nothing so far assuredly implies otherwise.

See, my issue is that you're equating the two and not even considering the idea that they could be separate things with separate interests.

To me, Gaster comes off as the one that set all these things in motion to some desired end that he's certain will come no matter what happens. That's why he doesn't care about your routes. He says the same stuff in the end no matter if you're doing WEIRD or normal, if you got Shadow Crystals or not, etc. He knows he'll get his Deltarune by the end.
FRIEND specifically seems tied into all the side content. It has minor appearances in the main story, particularly the Endogeny type jumpscare, but the bulk of it's presence is in the side stuff with the Shadow Crystals. And that path is all about the idea of "FREEDOM" while FRIEND seems to be something of a "servant".
I see it more as Gaster is using/controlling FRIEND and all the Shadow Crystal stuff is something FRIEND is doing to subvert Gaster's ideas. Gaster's taking a passive role to see the experiment play out but FRIEND is tweaking variables beneath his notice.
