Portrait is the best of the handheld games, but it excels at music, characters, and little touches of a humor. Like all the other handheld games, the actual game part is pretty subpar. It's inherently limited by the control scheme and the fact that the levels are so compartmentalized. They aren't the terrible, boring linear levels that OoE has, but they're a massive step down from SotN.

I only played some of it when it was in beta on Android, have no idea why it's only an IOS exclusive, but I remember being surprised by the cutscenes and shit. It's clear someone at Konami still likes Castlevania, and GoS weirdly had a surprising amount of soul. it's too simple a game is the problem. sprites can only be visually upgraded so far and it's rarely worth the effort. the only other option is a remake that's changed to a 3d action adventure which has never really worked with castlevania. I guess they have dark souls 1 as a proven 3d metroidvania model but there's basically no chance konami could pull off something like that.

The PS2 turds are easy targets, but the handheld games--good as some may be--also just tread water and hardly required Igarashi's specific genius (Harmony of Dissonance is a near-void of creativity and is as obvious a followup to Symphony of the Night as one could get). I like Art of Vengeance a lot but it is buggy. I wouldn't call it a Metroidvania either, but the exploration/backtracking that's there is superfluous feature bloat (we didn't need to glide). Shinobi is one of my favorite series and I wouldn't say it's my ideal followup to the Genesis/Game Gear games, but I still enjoy it. I don't begrudge it for doing something different since that's sort of Shinobi's M.O.

In a very broad sense, yes, but Art of Vengeance is still more focused on moment-to-moment challenges, be them combat or platforming. It's still a very linear stage-based game. In fact almost all of the backtracking is optional; even GG Shinobi II has more mandatory backtracking.
