The biggest appeal is the actual game itself. The gameplay. Smash is as popular as it is because it's a good game. This is why smash clones fail because they think it's all about the characters like you and this notion is clearly proven wrong with the failures of nasb and multiversus

I agree and I disagree at the same time. I personally think melee was the last smash to have good gameplay but I also personally believe none of them are bad. If you've never played modern melee ultimates gameplay will feel fine, and this is most people's experience with smash. You will never notice how bad ultimates input lag really is if you've never experienced anything better. So to them the game feels amazing, has a lot of characters to choose from, and is also well balanced. Imo theres nothing wrong with ignorantly thinking ultimate is good. If it feels good to play to them then that's all that matters. There's no reason for them to care about a platform fighter having good momentum if they are ignorant to the fact that it exists at all in one of the older smash games

There are thousands of people not playing the game because they feel there are no interesting characters to play. The game can't be good if none of the characters are any fun to play to a group of people larger than the number of people currently online. You can find this same opinion anywhere on the internet about rivals 2, it's literally what most people are saying. The rest just complains about one of the games core mechanics being awful (floor fucking), and the games lack of content. A good game doesn't have a lack of content and a good game has fun characters.
