I have no idea why nintendo would approach sakurai to make this at the same time a new mario kart was releasing. I could understand if it was a passion project on sakurai's end but what's the strategy here? MKW has more mechanic depth than previous MK games so they want a simpler game released alongside it?

Idk Nintendo begged Sakurai to do it, even though they had MKW in the works.
I'm glad though cause Air Ride is awesome and there was always a lot of room to do more with a sequel.

I can't wait to see how this game performs. I think this will vastly overperform what most people are expecting because the Switch 2 is so dry right now and still early in its lifespan. At the very least, Sakurai knows how to put together a team for a great soundtrack.

My only guess is Nintendo wanted a racer as a foot in the door for non-Kirby fans that write off the series for being too easy. Sonic's racer from a few years back ended up being the best selling Sonic game since the Genesis games (before Frontiers outdid it), and Crash's CTR remake ended up selling over 10 mil.
