By the 2000s it definitely was already a trope, think of Strawberry Panic and similar stuff.
The base for this pairings come as early as the 70s i think.
In Aim to the Ace, the protagonist has a rivalry and admiration towards the Ojou-sama in a melodramatic way that leaves fertile ground for /u/fags, men or women that like that stuff.
Even a bit earlier, though one sided Oscar and Rosalie also fit the pairing somewhat.
