The fifth generation of consoles, what a time to be alive. The twilight of 2D being the focus of games, but still getting some of the best 2D fighters, 2D action games around. Old titles saw great 2D installment and 3D was making its advent.
Playstation had big hitters like Alundra, Crash, Spyro, Klonoa, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7-9, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ghost in the Shell, Tomba 1 & 2, Ace Combat 1-3, Mega Man Legends 1, 2 & Tron Bonne, Silent Bomber, and holy shit the import library - it's phenomenal. Pushing 3D forward too with many 60fps 3D games.
Saturn had top class 2D and arcade style games like Sega Rally Championship, Astal, Panzer Dragoon, Zwei, the legendary RPG Panzer Dragoon Saga, 3D platformers like Burning Rangers, Die Hard Arcade, Virtua Cop 1 & 2, timeless fighters like Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtual-On and of course, the Saturn is famous for its massive Japanese library that you don't need any Japanese skills to play.
N64 had Mario, Zelda, the list goes on...

the games are nearly all unplayable today. we moved on for good reasons. jank, terrible graphics, low frame rates, muh fog after 3 meters. PS1 probably has like 5 games that hold up like spyro, crash, mgs. every other game on that system is horrible.
In retrospect I can't enjoy any gen 5 console other than N64. Not interested in dealing with 5 minute load times and constant wall and floor wiggling

It was an amazing generation. I owned a chipped PSX and played most of the great games. My cousin and another friend both owned the N64 so I got to play the best it had to offer as well.
I didn't know anybody who owned a Saturn but I bought one last year to check it out

This, a week ago I tried Blood Omen on PS1 and the constant loading screens made me drop the game after one session.

I think i prefer the 4th gen but yes, the 5th gen was an amazing time to be alive.
I absolutely love that 2d games were still getting made on Saturn/PS1, and not just any old 2d games - they were the best looking 2d games ever made.
If you're a fan of 2d sprite art then you absolutely owe it to yourself to check out some of the great 2d titles from generation 5.

I emulate ps1 games all the time, they aged liked fine wine and texture warping is SOVL.
The console that aged like milk is the n64.

It's hard to go back to some of them. I have so much nostalgia for it though. Mid to late 90's. No internet, into discovering the early internet, an era of digital pioneers and freedom. The shift from 2D to 3D. The absolute insane exponential pace of technological evolution when a game could look outdated after a couple of months when everything feels stagnant and derivative today. Nerd shit being underground or experimental and crossing over into the mainstream, even anime was cool with dark edgy OVAs, movies were still shot on film and only beginning to experiment with digital sfx, still mostly done using on-set tricks. No smartphones, no normies, no social network, no woke shit, all that cancer. Cool factor was the only thing that mattered. The zeitgest was incredible. Going into a store to find cheap used titles or obscure imports, the culture of rumors, there was still so much untapped potential to gaming, it was so exciting and we had so much imagination about what could be done next, the future seemed bright and optimistic. Not just the games but the whole gaming culture back then was so much cooler. But also simpler. I have nostalgia for old gaming mags, and I go back to read them and I realize there's so much bullshit, how shallow the gaming language was. Innocent times. We didn't think of it as "the industry". Less predatory and sanitized. It was not seen as "an art" either. Fun and cool were the only things that mattered. Even if you replay the games now, you may have less fun, but you still feel that zeitgest through how the games were designed.

Why the fuck isn't out there a good, cheap and effortless downscaler that can output 240p from a PC. I could get a SFF used Dell, HP or Lenovo office PC into a emulation station to plug on my old CRT TV and play all of the gen 1 to gen 6 consoles, plus the obscure Japanese games that never arrived here in the US, translated and from rare JP systems like the PC Engine, PC-FX or the FM towns marty.
