It's incredibly retarded writing. I actually like Mel a lot, she's an interesting character. She's basically a child soldier but she still manages to be kind and compassionate. However, if this is her story, it ends with her killing Chronos permanently.

In the first game, Hades is the villain, but he's not actually that bad of a guy. At worst, he's a distant and uncaring father. But all of his actions are done for noble reasons (he just wants to protect his wife), even if they seem cruel from Zag's perspective. Over the course of the game, you can see his relationship with Zagreus grow and change, and at the end when they reconcile, it feels completely natural and earned.

In Hades 2, Chronos has none of the redeeming traits Hades had. His motivation is purely vengeance and spite. He is overtly malicious and cruel. Mel's entire life has been dedicated to killing him and saving her family. But then Zag comes in, talks to him, and he becomes a friendly grandpa? And it all happens instantly. It apparently was years for him and Zag, but for Mel (and the player), it's a complete 180 overnight. It's completely in character for Zag, but what was the point?

I could rant more, for example the ending makes Prometheus's role in the game make no sense at all, but the question I have is WHY IS ZAGREUS NOT THE PROTAGONIST? If the player was Zag, then it would make sense. In fact, I think it would be compelling: sure Zag reconciled with his father, but reconciling with someone as evil as Chronos would have been a much stiffer task. The whole game could have been themed around Zag desperately trying to convince his Grandfather that peace with his children would be ok. Chronos's eventual redemption would feel earned, because it was Zag (and the player)'s goal all along.

Cast is one of the biggest improvements. The main benefit to Cast in Hades 1 was the 50% damage increase to whatever they were stuck in, and most Cast Boons removed that aspect (Ares, Dionysus, Demeter, etc.).
Which means most Boons actively made you build deal 50% less damage; they were awful.

Hades 2 Casts are significantly stronger and can be used tactically to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed due to its default slow effect, which can be incredibly useful when playing with Frenzy on. far more options.

Honestly he's one of the bosses that experience does the most for, when I first got to him he was a massive wall but eventually you get a feel for him. Then its the same thing when he gets herc as a backup dancer but both of them are managable if you start knowing how their attacks work. One of my favorite things is slowly realizing that I was starting to fight both of them at the same time in my runs when at first I just focused on one at a time.

Hades (the character) in the first game works as a redeemable antagonist because he's never actually the villain. He's not trying to destroy anything, he's just keeping the machine running whilst his slacker son keeps trying to disrupt order on what Hades feels is a suicide mission at worst or something that will lead to heartbreak at best. One of the coolest moments in the game is Hades saying he's not going to fight that night and just lets you pass because his heart is no longer in stopping Zag and he does hold out hope that maybe he will see Persephone again.

Chronos pre-Zag mindbending would never give such mercy. He's throwing absolutely everything he has to destroy both Hades (the place) and Mount Olympus, he's released a great evil, taken prisoners, corrupted a dog, ruined lives.

Sparing Chronos like he did IS what Zag would do, but it's not his story. If Zag could have achieved the same goal, but was actually able to convince Mel to do it rather than just doing it and saying "just trust me" when he gets told off about it, it would be a little better. But it's still sweeping aside all the shit Chronos did like it was nothing.

This is not to mention the forgotten story under it all: how the mortals are repeatedly wronged by the gods, most of the gods aren't even slightly sorry for it, and so maybe Chronos does have a bit of a point.

Just finished the game yesterday. I have no idea about how to feel about the ending.
On one side, I understand what they were going for and to me, it made sense. But the resolution still fucking underwhelming.

I died within seconds the first time I reached phase three. Those long arrows from all angles absolutely wrecked me while I was trying to get hits in.
The second time I reached Phase 3 I just ran around like a coward, and learned that he becomes a lot safer to fight further into his boss pattern. And whenever the damn arrows on the ground starts bullshitting it's really all about fleeing until things calms down.

Shit is real fucking intense though. None of the other fights have got anything on it.
It's funny though. Phase 3 Chronos made me completely re-evaluate Apollo's sprint. 50% additional movement speed is actually pretty huge.

There’s an arcana card that increases the odds. Best way I’ve found is to just start a run normally, then see what god shows up. Once you pick one, switch to their keepsake on floor 2. So, I only played this for a bit, shortly after EA and on live, did two clears so far. But it seems like gods were not created equal. Like, most of the damage seems to be baked into Hestia's burn and Zeus' thunder strikes. At least in the early game. The other gods' boons are more supplementary, passive damage increases, not something you would want to see on your primary attack.
