Absolutely positively never do any kind of upgrade without backing up first, anon. Even if you're not upgrading, if you have important files you can't afford to lose, they should be backed up. Hard drives fail, even SSDs. In fact, my last data loss occurred on an SSD because I got complacent in thinking I was safer. I kept having one game crashing constantly and could not find a fix. Turns out it was because specific asset files were corrupted. I lost a lot of valuable data across the drive.

BACKUP.

Second, learn how to format your PC and do a fresh install. It's better all around to do a clean install. My advice to you from a power user is to have secondary hard drives for your personal files. I have a hard drive for my music/pictures, I have a hard drive for my movies/tv, one for my development work etc. I also REGEDIT windows to make my "Desktop," "APPDATA," and "Documents" folders on a secondary drive. That way if windows go bad, I just relink their directory to my new installation and all my saved games and program data is still there. Though I also routinely clean those of old program data and what, but don't worry about going that far.

This is absolutely the case. PC's are for work and for video games now. Microsoft wants to keep chasing a user that doesn't exist, and trying to to force current users into something they do not want.

I use this software called Directory Opus and have for years. It's a replacement for windows explorer and gives me shit loads of options that Microsoft should have implemented into explorer years ago. That's their main issue, they do not create features that developers and gamers want in an operating system. Nobody wants to upgrade because it's never a fucking upgrade.

Why would I inconvenience myself having to re setup all my shit for an OS that acts no different than the one before? What have they done to make my experience better to warrant a new OS version? Unclear. Official MS websites say going from 10 to 11 will always be a free update if you meet the hardware requirements AND ARE ON A SUPPORTED 10 INSTALLATION. After the 14th, normal non LTSC 10 is no longer supported, so maybe it won't work? However if you enroll in the ESU then maybe you're still covered until 2026. It's unclear on purpose to make you want to switch now.

Also, it depends on your product key. I'm pretty sure when I made my PC I used an 11 key downgraded to 10. So even if updating is blocked, if I do a fresh install of 11 it should still go through. I don't really see them blocking upgrading to 11 since they want people on 11 more than they want the money from people having to purchase legitimate w11 keys, but who knows. Installation is as easy as it gets, if you have separate drive I would advise to use it instead of dual boot on the same drive.
After installation you only need to download some packages to be able to run Lutris and Steam.
