I wasn't really familiar with the expanse setting, so I started reading the books.

Honestly, I thought it was pretty good right up until
>vomit zombies
where it got a bit sillier.

Basically, the impression that I'm getting at least from the books is that this is going to be harder science (but not really hard science) Mass Effect. Sorry if I'm a slowpoke on this, but most of the threads on this game were just people bitching about Owlcat and not really talking about the Expanse setting from what I saw.

Owlcat and waifus are relevant to my interests.
Wokie netflix tripe #654 is the opposite, its actually a stumbling block the devs will need to overcome to try and sell this.

The Expanse is nothing *but* good. That's its main flaw.
Anonymous No.723119713 [Report]
The vomit zombies are basically the "husks" of the setting, shit gets a lot wilder.

well the original concept of the expanse was meant to be an mmo
in terms of the science, all of the ship physics is newtonian with the epstein drive basically just being a huge fusion engine
ship to ship combat is missiles and torpedos from huge km ranges and defense miniguns to try and shoot down incoming rockets
theres not a lot of infantry combat shown but the mars special forces combat suit is a spacesuit+targetting helmet and arm gun all in one
the people living in the belt are being born, raised and live in lower gravity so they're meant to be a lot more tall and thin (think slenderman). the tv show does this for literally 1 episode, s1e1, and then doesnt mention it again because casting a bunch of tall lanky people for your characters is nigh impossible
mars is kind of like the insurrectionists from halo mixed with a bit of north korea. they all live underground on mars trying to make terraforming technology. its drilled into martian heads so much that the special forces helmets have holo projections showing a terraformed mars specifically to boost morale
martian society as a whole is built entirely around the terraforming so when the space portals to other planets show up theres a bit of a schism in mars but it never gets addressed because the books just focus on holden

I just hope they don't pussy out on the racism.

>Belters feel betraged because they are an unintentionally enginnered race of exiles who's work facilitates the wealth of the inner planets and who can never return to the birthplace of humanity because their bodies can no longer survive there.

And it'll get smooshed into something akin to:
"Belters are like opressed man, just like black people"

The book series was great until they switched from space-based political intrigue to generic action alien shit. I'll also never forgive the show for the character assassination they did to Draper compared to her actually being good in the books

I can't think of a character that wasn't ruined in the show. Everyone was made worse (and dumber for good measure).

I think Miller was very well done in season 1, and Amos in the early seasons was pretty accurate to the books. As overdone as the actor is in sci-fi, Avasarala was also pretty good. Everyone else was weird though, especially on the main crew

No matter what the source material is, Owlcat writing is far too wordy.
They could cut basucally every convo by like 30% and we wouldnt miss anything.

I hated how Miller went from incompetent drunk to corrupt cop. And Amos was made way too much of an aggressive dumb retard. He choked out Alex and was needlessly antagonistic towards Martians for no reason.

Imagine being a belter and finally getting some earther pussy and feeling that full G worth of developed muscles squezzing your rocket, finally understanding that this is how good your ancestors had it and this is what the inner planets took from you, honestly i'd join the OPA right then and there
Anonymous No.723122985 [Report] >>723127702
>>723122568
eh that's fair I guess, I always saw him as a belter first guy so the corruption didn't strike me as being too far off character given that it was against an earth based police force. Amos was definitely a dumb retard in the first couple books, he basically didn't think for himself unless Naomi or eventually Holden told him to do something.

I love the universe though so looking forward to the game, even if owlcat has been hit or miss with their writing in the past

That's probably going to be a necessity of having all the lines voice acted, which is something they're going to need to do if they want to make a tps. CRPG players might put up with reading a bunch of shit, but TPS players won't.

Most of the problems with the show come from the superstitions of Hollywood dipshits. They think a story can't work if you don't have some kind of domestic inanity going on. You can't just have a crew that gets along and the conflict comes from politics and alien shit, you've got to have a bunch of inter-personal conflicts for "drama."

I'm reading the books and while I basically devoured 1-4 the 5th book took me like 3 months because it didn't grab me at all. Splitting the main party was not a good play, I really just cared about the Amos and Holden side-plots.

Amos only got excessively aggressive when it came to the food situation on Ganymede. That's his first outburst. Not randomly antagonizing soldiers or trying to kill his co-workers for no reason.
Hell he threatens to kill Holden, the guy that's supposed to be his morale compass, in one of the earliest episodes.

I'd argue Camina Drummer and Klaes Aahford are better characters in the show, which technically is still a form of killing rh echaractwe considering how much they differ from their book version.

I stopped reading the books when I got to the book where the main characters were:
A: A lesbian, married, Catholic priest, where the series never bothers to explain how those two mutually exclusive factors co-exist
B: a gay group of polyamorous space hippies practicing free love
Am I missing anything good past that?

Yeah I stopped at the one after that actually
Amos running around on Earth was fun and actually just to read more of him and Clarissa Mao but I disliked how the rest of it was just Naomi’s Ex: The Book
I guess I’m asking if it’s worth reading past the next one, Babylon’s Ashes, cus it started with a lesbian couple and a gay poly sex ship and I was like nah

i agree with his statement and can give my own explanation.

some media (ok, most) makes you do a ton of legwork to keep them good; you have to headcannon in a ton of shit about motives and mechanics. this contributes to shit like game of thrones, and 40k, and dune being talked about for so long, and so intently, by autists. when it comes to expanse threads? google them for me. go ahead, look around. there's (relatively) little. this is because the writers created both abstract lines and character lines that remained consistent from page one all the way through.
this means that for a game set in the expanse world, it's not going to function like a game set in, say, the 40k universe. people handwave endless shit from the 40k universe because they've filled in so much empty (or worse, contrary) space in the setting with their own headcannon- this makes them owners of the space, or at least invested enough that a game set in 40k can JUST BE SET IN 40K. that's it. that's all it takes to succeed. and once again, to check me, look around. are 40k/dune/got games celebrated for being amazing games? or 'damn they really nailed the setting!' games. maybe they are actually good games that could standalone, but i can say one thing for sure.
setting a game in the 'expanse universe' is so utterly, laughably meaningless. it's like saying 'my game will be set in kentucky.' ok? and? but what about the game?
