Linux Gaming
Windows 10 is kill. I'm not sure about Windows 11 with all the forced account and forced bloat/telemetry bogging you down.
Is Linux actually viable for gaming? Which distro is most compatible with Steam and Nvidia GPUs and general use? Love to hear from Linuxfags if it's working out for them

>Is Linux actually viable for gaming?
There is a reason you will see the majority of linux users owning a motorcycle or having a non computer hobby and its because they primarily use it for work on servers. Linux gaming is real but when things stop working and you mess with shit you realize you are doing a day job for free to play something gay like battlefield or worse a simulated day job like an mmo

Try them all out with a VM. It doesn't matter too much which one you pick because the most important aspect for you is going to be the desktop environment manager. Take something that looks fine to you.
99% of all windows programs work on it these days because Steam makes it laughable easy, so it is plug & play with it. Just launch everything with Steam. For games like Battlefield 6 or Valorant you can just put Windows on an SSD USB stick and launch Windows from that and play it like that. It's how I play it at the moment because no way I'm installing the fucking EA driver on a machine with valuable information. Otherwise, you can also get a mini PC with proxmox and have like hundreds of VMs running on it. I have a cluster for video/photo editing on a windows VM
Linux is good for gaming
UNLESS
you have to inject something into the game with an outside dll or some weird ass crack
OR
it has some kind of gay check that forces it to be on windows (these games all suck)
OR
it's a unity game because it will run like shit
But now that proton is a thing it's fine for gaming unless it's really CPU intensive.
If you have an IQ above 20 you should be able to dual boot without destroying your system.

You still have support on 10 for the LTSC version and 11, with all its problems, is still a fair choice for gaming. If you do the bare minimum to debloat it, it'll work well and run all the stuff you want to. That's not to say that Microsoft isn't scummy or that it won't make things even more difficult in the future.
If the idea of being free from them and not having to care about what they're up to is more important to you than the learning curve and general troubleshooting you'll face on linux, regardless of distro, now it's a good time to try stuff out. You have the safety net of going back to windows and no doomsday anxiety of having to migrate everything at once.
>Viable for gaming
Sure. There's rare cases where linux will run stuff better in equivalent hardware. But most of the time it'll be the same or close to. Online games with kernel level anti cheat are not supported
>Which distro for Steam and Nvidia
If you have a recent GPU under the 50 series, it should run fine on most major distros. But for beginners, either check out Mint, Zorin or Bazzite. Mint and Zorin are easy to use/everyday distros that would be nice to get you acquainted with how things work. Bazzite is much more dedicated to gaming and does a few things differently with performance possibly being better, depending on the case. Regardless of what you choose, try them out on a spare computer/laptop or throw them on a VM first

First things off I recommend you go with KDE as your desktop since it is the one that will feel most at home coming from Windows (also it's probably the most developed one? Not sure).
Not sure about Nvidia support since I have AMD, but I switched from windows to CachyOS been an year now and every game I tried runs perfectly. Thing is that I don't care about the games that don't run like EA/Riot slop with anticheat, so if you do play those you might have to submit and spread wide for microsoft.
Windows 11 is so unbelievably shit.

For me, it's EndeavourOS with KDE; it's just Arch without the annoying vanilla Arch baggage or any of the bloat you see in other Arch-based distros like Manjaro. Been that way for a little over a year after a lot of distro hopping in the year prior. Works just fine with my 3070ti. Of course there's been stuff I've had to tinker with to make it work and feel better for my liking, but between the growing laundry list of shit you have to do for Win10 (and especially 11) to make them suck less, and how much you can do now on Linux with simply copy-pasting console commands, it really feels like Windows is rapidly losing a lot of its "just works" advantage for midwit and semi-power users whom I would argue to actually be the hardest demos to win over to Linux.
>Thing is that I don't care about the games that don't run like EA/Riot slop with anticheat, so if you do play those you might have to submit and spread wide for microsoft.
Yeah, this is likely gonna be the biggest deciding factor for whether or not Linux gaming is right for you. Thankfully all the shit I wanna play these days is pretty old or old-spec (the "newest" game I play with any sort of regularity is Elden Ring, and that runs just fine since it originally targeted PS4s), so I've been a happy camper.

So much this. Windows 11 broke so often for me it got to the point I just ended up reinstalling it whenever there was major update shoved down my throat. And since you can't just copy a single file with all your settings like in Linux, I had a very, *very* expansive .txt with everything I need to change and switch off every time I formatted.
Also ChatGPT and AI LLMS has been great boon for Linux usage thanks to terminal, it's been much easier to do some random tasks like renaming all files in a specific folder following specific format you want.

Apex I think is because of EA's own in-house anti-cheat.
Games like Fantasy Life i, Elden Ring, DBFZ, Sea of Thieves, 7 Days to Die, and Megaton Musashi all use EAC and they work fine on the Deck.
In fact, I'm pretty sure most of those games are verified, and it's not like you can get verification if one part of the game doesn't work properly, because GTA V singleplayer also works perfectly on the Deck and it's still marked as unplayable because the MP doesn't work anymore.

It's the only viable distro because it's the only distro built with the aim of being a stable, ergonomic and generally usable os. Every other disto does not have this aim.
>Fedora, Tumbleweed
Aims To provide free beta testing for companies that make millions of dollars in profit every year.
>Ubuntu, Rhel, Suse
Aims to milk money from customers through shilling support packages.
>Debian
Free software ideology comes first. Great if you want a base but terrible for the end user as you have to make a bunch of sacrifices to only use free software.
>Arch and its derivatives
You have to read a fucking mailing list every time you update because the arch devs do not perform any real sort of QA on the updates they push and just shovel anything from upstream onto the repos. AUR is full of malware, devs are too lazy to ship calamares installer with iso so you have to use their botched install script, which breaks every other release or manually install it with is tedious. Also even though there is no QA on updates Arch is slowly becoming less bleeding edge compared to something like Fedora which makes using Arch pointless if you want the latest and greatest. It's only saving grace is the cli tool yay, which is 3rd party.
>Gentoo
Enjoy compiling every piece of software from source. This process can take up to a couple of days to complete. Every update is a pain in the ass because you have to recompile everything.
>Distro X maintained by a single person
Good luck when that fucker gets bored of being free tech support and just abandons the project - which is a story as old as time.
Mint is the only sensible choice unless you're a linux dev who needs bleeding edge packages or that you want to make your os your identity and spend all day on /g/ gooning out to the latest
rice.

if you don't play games with kernel anticheat, then the answer is yes. all my games work, including modding. dx12 games will perform slightly worse than on windows as of now though, but they are working on fixing this.
>Which distro is most compatible with Steam and Nvidia GPUs and general use?

Your OS is a fucking joke perpetuated by poors and browns. Windows has contributed more to "Free Open Sores Software" than all of your inbred neckbeard fingers slapping your cock on your 41% keyboards 10 times over. You feel like you are in control for once in your life when it comes to something you love because your adamant anti-social behaviors put your OPERATING SYSTEM (a simple tool) before everything. You will die crying that Window's sucks while your x.config is deleted. Again.

the main thing is optimizations for cutting-edge hardware
you probably won't notice a huge difference, if you already have a configured arch system then just switching to cachy repos like
>>723130930 said will get you 90% of the way there anyways
if you don't have latest gen hardware you won't benefit much
aside from that it's really just another "arch with an installer", perfectly decent distro

Really wish lincucks would get better material. Face the facts, Sven, making Linux free and packaging it with GNU is prime breeding ground for poors and browns. If you cannot afford a $100 TOOL, which is what an operating system IS, then truly I have no respect for your opinion as it all ricing advice and weeb shit. You scavenge parts to make Frankenstein rigs that let you play games from 1997. Good job, dude. Tell you what, once you grow up and start using the tool for something other than play we can have the real talk.

Don't install Mod Organizer 2 via some faggy third party script or whatever.
Just unpack the official release to the game's prefix (../steamapps/compdata/AppId/pfx/drive_c/Mod Organizer 2.5.2), add the ModOrganizer.exe as a non Steam game and edit the launch option as follows
>STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/path/to/pfx %command%
and in compatibility tab select force Proton whatever version you also use for the game.
Proton Experimental seems to have some issues with GVFS but 10.0-2 works fine.
For BethINI to work you'll need to grab a seguisym.ttf font file somewhere and put it next to the exe.

Basically a recipe for not understanding why your distro isn't doing something correctly and needing to ask someone on Reddit or Discord for help.

It is literally pointless, it's not even like Artix, where getting rid of systemd would be a more involved endeavorOS.
How the fuck do you install and run pirated games? Been running on circles and nothing works, Lutris, Heroic.... etc

That's a load of crap. CachyOS has very sensible defaults so it requires near zero tinkering after initial setup, unlike bare Arch where even with archinstall you would've have to manually configure a lot of shit, starting with sysctl settings. CachyOS repos have stuff precompiled that you would have to install from aur otherwise.

ngl, Linux is an imperfect solution to a problem we shouldn't be needing to face to begin with. Not even trying to shit on Linux here, the core of the issue is the Windows monopoly when it comes to commercial PC operating systems. If you're going for a Windows alternative, it's Linux or nothing, assuming you don't go Mac, and let's be real, why would you?

I have i7 7700k plus 2080s and i installed the cinnamon ver. I played noita on it and it slows down every 3 seconds. On the same machine there is win10 pre installed(planning on deleting soon) on it and it still perfoms normally, 60fps locked without slow downs. Do you think my issue is nvidia and using that os rather than something like xfce, plus it's more nvidia compatible somehow? The funny thing is rdr2 works perfectly fine on cinnamon, having a nvidia's gpu but with noita it struggles. I feel like cpu based games struggling on it due to poor computation, or just not compatible with old cpu. Do you think cinnamon is not very good with old cpus and rather than getting an upgrade it's more like a downgrade for me? And do you think xfce can resolve it?

It would be nice, but its "sensible defaults and alterations" aren't in most troubleshooting or installation guides, so if anything goes wrong, you have no idea what happened, which is something that I need, since I am a brainlet and don't want to have to figure out what I'm doing wrong when the normal Arch installation responds correctly with all the same steps.
>CachyOS repos have stuff precompiled that you would have to install from aur otherwise
You can just add the repos to your pacman config and install those packages specifically, there are even instructions/scripts for doing this in the CachyOS installation guide

Changing launchers won't help as much as using all of the settings in whatever launcher you're using. You have wine and/or proton installed right? That's what launchers use to actually run games.

That guy is right, your "sensible" defaults make you a snowflake as far as Linux users go. You can have issues on Cachy that no other distro has and the only people who can help you with those are other Cachy users (assuming they aren't clueless).
For example I had graphical artifacting in a specific game in only a very specific location on CachyOS. This issue happened in no other Linux distros. I mean, to be fair, I only bothered trying Arch beside Cachy, but since the problem wasn't in Arch I can assure you it was in no other distro.
Maybe you want to deal with weird shit like that, good for you. I wouldn't, though.

That's why they're called sensible: they won't break out of nowhere and they shouldn't cause any system instabilities.
>You can just add the repos to your pacman config and install those packages specifically, there are even instructions/scripts for doing this in the CachyOS installation guide
So you will end up with the same CachyOS system but with hours wasted on tinkering. That's exactly my current setup: Arch with CachyOS repos and settings. Only I've spent hours over the years reading and applying those settings. But I have an excuse: I've migrated from Ubuntu to Arch before applying CachyOS repos and settings.

Sounds like graphics driver bug that could be caused by CachyOS using mesa-git by default instead of mesa. Could be solved by simply installing regular mesa.
But that's nothing compared to kernel bug that caused btrfs systems to go in ro on dirty shutdown, which was fixed in 3 days on CachyOS and took weeks for the next minor kernel release on vanilla Arch and Fedora

I use nvidia card so no mesa is involved. On both I used the same nvidia open driver, although I used dkms with arch. Not that it makes a difference. If I had to pick a suspect, I think they fucked with the wine/proton on Cachy and did something to it. The game had very odd performance. Lower frame rates but also much lower GPU usage that wasn't proportionately lower to the frame rate.

"Shouldn't" doesn't mean that they won't. For the average beginning user you're just adding more potential edge-case complications on top of a normal Arch install and the more advanced user is probably better served just adding the CachyOS repos and optimizations themselves when they want them.
So clearly this means you have more experience with Arch + Cachy repo/settings, rather than CachyOS, you also understand what the settings do and what you have to do to make new software work with them because you added them yourself. This is not conducive to recommending that new or inexperienced users should use CachyOS.

I still have dual boot with windows on a smaller ssd because of a couple of programs that I use sometimes (FL Studio and CS Paint mostly)
Gaming just werks 99% of the time for me, I even got Dragon Quest X playing easier than I did on windows
You literally just open steam and Gabe just makes it work
It is nice to at least learn the basics of the terminal and such but if you're not up for it you can always just ask chat gpt and it is surprisingly very good at giving you pointers
The biggest issue I had was with SNES emulation somehow because I thought it was a nvidia driver issue and it was just that I was retarded and had the computer set to power saving instead of performance.

grab yourself bazzite if you want something that works out of the box for gaming, or arch if you're a power user.

Otherwise, it's been nice using Fedora for everything else. I had made the switch once already from 2014 to 2019 until I got my current laptop which had major driver issues with Linux at launch and it took me 5 years to muster up the fucks to give to see if things had improved for that model after dealing with 11's increasing bullshit.

Yes, but until more people stop giving Microsoft the details of their daily lives, it's not going to be as brainless.
It's close to being that easy, but sooner or later, you'll manage to find an issue with compatibility.
All the ease of using Microsoft comes from its popularity causing developers to focus on it.
It would be just as simple to run shit on a Linux if it got the development focus that Windows gets, but that requires people start making the jump beforehand, and avoiding Microsoft being a shithole company abusing their customers is a good reason to do it now instead of waiting.

It was inevitable when trying to play any modern looking game, and every single time resulted in a hard freeze that required holding the power button to force shut down the entire PC.
Using Fedora now, and while I still have the memory leak issues, it handles it much more gracefully.

people hate what they've never used, it's always the same. flatpaks comes with a large initial install to setup the environment which doesn't help.
but yeah, i install most apps as flatpaks these days because package managers have a tiny selection and don't necessarily update as often as the flatpak.

No need to switch, just install the repos and try it.
https://wiki.cachyos.org/features/optimized_repos/#adding-our-repositories-to-an-existing-arch-linux-install
Install the Kernel with sudo pacman -S linux-cachyos linux-cachyos-headers and if you have a nvidia gpu linux-cachyos-nvidia (proprietary) or linux-cachyos-nvidia-open (open module).
Easy to remove if you dont like it.

most benchmarks clearly show that there's very little difference between distributions. if you're comfortable on nobara that's all that matters.
but if you do want to test out shit, put your home folder in its own partition or btrfs subvolume then you can easily swap between distribution.

Thanks anon, I didn't know you could do that. Since it seems like its not a big difference I might wait to try it out until the next time I feel like tinkering. Or if GE stops or royally fucks up Nobara.

no they don't, most software developers don't distribute their software at all, and the ones that do use flatpak or appimages.
Remember that despite having just 5.8% sales, over 38% of bug reports come from the Linux community
Linux sucks so bad they find more bugs and with less people, maybe stop making Wayland vs X11 and merge them into 1 good graphics protocol

if you want to save your data you either need a seperate hard drive or to repartition your drive in order to make space for linux. fyi having linux installed on the same drive as windows can lead to some issues, it's better if you can get a second hard drive.

Just use Ubuntu (default) or Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu).
That's the easiest most default Linux experience you'll ever get.
If it doesn't work on Ubuntu even with a YouTube tutorial, than it doesn't work on Linux.

Just use Mint, its a general purpose beginner friendly distro and the only one I've ever felt like using since I switched from windows.
Gaming is perfectly fine on it, just use proton via steam and nothing will go wrong.
You can even load windows games from by running them through steam proton, just cycle through the versions if its something old that doesn't work at first but everything I've tried (including pirated games) works perfectly.
Windows is actually slower and harder to use/update now and I'm not joking.
