Its awful, pointless clicker that is even worse than heroes 6 & 7, but it works I spent 21 hours with it, checked each faction, each mode and read most of the bullshit they inserted into the game . It's just bad clicker, simplified version of previous HoMM titles with atrocious art design which has little to do with homm franchise.
Most concepts for units and heroes are *inspired*, sometimes 1 to 1 from other IPs, Angel is nearly 1:1 imperius from diablo 3

Factions plays very identical to each other (since game uses HoMM VII like round systems, which completely undermines initiative stat). Racials aren't balanced, magic sucks and nearly useless (combat field is smaller than HoMM2+pointless gacha-like alechemic dust mechanic) compared to combat classes (knight, warlord etc)

might gets an early lead since both types have similar early magic utility
then magic pulls ahead dramatically with impactful damage spells against limited armies and the added utility from expert skills
and finally, especially if armies are preserved, might again takes the lead in late game since they should have their own expert magic by that point and there are simply too many creatures with too much health and too many resistances for magic alone to prevail

what makes it great is not just the wax and wane, but that there are many exceptions to the trend depending upon artifacts, creatures, and specific skills and spells

I don't like necropolis. Tier 2-4 units seem kinda useless. And at tier 1, the not-archer unit is useless.

I was in the middle of a scenario, with like half of the map undiscovered and I just saw a couple of enemy heroes coming in and out of fog of war when I suddenly was declared a winner and the game booted me to the main menu with info on following / wishlisting the game.

I'm not even talking about that, though yes I think Olden Era buildings blend in more you can get over that after playing the towns for a little while (but most likely you're not clicking the buildings either). My problem is that's it's just very plain and boring. It doesn't have the charm of 3 (or even 2), and despite being 3D you still have a locked camera position so it doesn't take advantage of it being 3D like 5 did.

But beyond that it's just a boring town design. Look at V's, massive citadel in the center surrounded by the town. You look at something like Academy and it's a flying city in the sky. Sylvan was a settlement built inside of and around a giant tree. They were cartoony but they used that to their advantage. Olden Era's towns are just plain and generic.
