Actually learn some quick opening strings like xxxyyy for DS. Abuse dash to stun enemies and follow into said strings. Enemies will be block happy until bloodied. Izuna is still reliable but there's so many cool strings I'd experiment. For example x>yy where you pile drive someone is very satisfying. You can redirect wind path at the point of pressing A. You can cancel the end animation lag of an izuna by doing the >x windmill slash just as your enemy's head hits the ground. RE is all about minimizing any potential downtime to be on the offence permanently, more so than 2. Enemies that dodge/block a lot like alchemists are susceptible to heavy strings which leaves them open to a launcher attack. Once you get into the rhythm of it the game feels easier than you'd like until you get to UN

3 is a very different game and you should not approach it with an NG mindset.
juggles are crippled, the game expects you to fight on the ground and most of your damage & delimb is relegated to the heavies within a string.

Are there any avid Ninja Gaiden players here? I've started NGB recently and it's filtering me hard. I'm at the very beginning with a red samurai riding a horse on the bridge. My first instinct was to deal with spell-casting fuckers and then switch to the main boss. But they keep respawning.
So I decided just to concentrate on the rider then and it's just not fun. I constantly dodge the projectiles and rider's attacks and take out small amounts of his health, sometimes killing casters when they get close. Sometimes I manage to charge strong attack and take out little more health than per usual combo chain. Camera being wonky and in constant need to recenter with a bumper isn't helping. It's not that it is hard but I feel I'm doing it wrong as it's just tedious and not fun at all. Maybe there's some technique I'm missing or something?

You can lock the rider down by just killing the 2 mages and using their essences to insta UT the rider. At certain points in his health bar the mages will respawn so just rinse and repeat. Concentrate on getting uts on the rider. Since you're probably on normal or hard he has no 2nd phase but very hard onwards his first health bar is just the horse and then you fight him again on foot.

We've seen how the fight plays out. Ryu BTFOs Yakumo at the start of the game. In the rematch, Ryu was testing Yakumo per Seori's last request to him and wasn't fighting to kill since Yakumo needed to be kept alive to purify the Dark Dragon who was unsealed by that point in the game. All Yakumo did was launch his blade at Ryu after he did a backflip to dodge an attack and missed. He couldn't force Ryu to open his guard and instead capitalized on a mistake that Ryu made. It shows that Yakumo is skilled without making him stronger than Ryu.

I like the game, but the story of NG4 is really dumb. Dumber than NG3. If Seori had let Ryu kill Yakumo at the start, then the whole plot of NG4 would have been prevented. The postgame flavor text reads that the Dark Dragon Blade will continue to exist as long as their is evil in the world, so purifying the Dark Dragon was pointless. They were ironically safer letting the fiends guard the fragments and keeping Seori alive.

The second boss is a good way to learn essence management. You can kill the mages to spawn essence. Holding guard prevents Ryu from immediately absorbing essence. Hold Y while essence is spawned, and Ryu will charge his UT a lot quicker so you can do big dick damage to the boss.

It's the first half of chapter 1 up to the cutscene where Ryu crashes into the window and Ryu has the three melee weapons on the box art of the game. DS, FT and ES. The LS is of course obtained the same as in the final game. Every one of these weapons is at level 3. The only other ranged weapon Ryu has is the Fiend's Bane Bow. For ninpo arts, Inferno is obtained just like in the final game, but the Wind Blades one is obtained on the bridge above the water by interacting with a dead body. Finally, the only difficulty available is Path Of The Acolyte.

There are almost no encounters like this in OG2 where you have 20 enemies on screen. Big encounters have enemies come in waves. Exception is the staircase.
You can also kite some enemies around in some levels to pull multiple groups of enemies and fight what is supposed to be several different encounters at the same time, but that's a disingenuous way to present the game as if it plays like that normally.

Unfortunately I think Plat, TN and Microsoft are expecting a lot more copies for NG4 to be a big enough success for 5 to happen.

All of them look pretty fun. The blood raven odachi seems super fun to me because of the sword extend moves, that one were you impale it into the ground and perch on it is so cool.

Why does every NG sequel not go back and try to make a similar experience to NG 2004/Black/Sigma? That game had a great balance of combat, exploration, world layout, pacing, etc that the sequels just don’t try to capture. They are trying to do different things. I think they kind of completed what was possible with an action game on that level in a sort of Zelda frame context.
You can tell in 1 that they wanted to go all over the place, so Tairon is crammed with tons of areas from completely different cultures and history. It's quite interesting, but it's also maybe a bit dumb when you stop and think about it. The world tour type stage based games in 2 and 3 allowed them to show a variety of different locations in natural way. I don't think any developer and creator wants to make the same game twice, so they looked at the most interesting part of 1 and decided and hone the action aspect and take the series in that direction.
From what we've seen of 4 at least it does seem like it has a little bit more variety in how the levels play out than 2 and especially 3, and it seems more focused on one main area like 1 rather than taking place all over the world.
I hope they still manage to have some level of visual variety though. Rain soaked cyber Tokyo is awesome, but it's nice to see different areas as well.
I think one of the reasons chapter 1 in 2 is so memorable is because of how good the presentation is in that level and the game doesn't go back to it, so it's a very standout part of the game and a killer first impression.

I remember when I got stuck on the save point with almost no health items at the first Alma fight on Master Ninja after doing the archives challenge because I realized I couldn't do the archives challenge after defeating her. It was pure hell, not just having to load back in but having to swim all the way through that tunnel, take the elevator, load in and run through that room and then go through the door, load again and then I could retry the fight.

I was honestly shocked when they announced this game, I did not expect Ninja Gaiden to come back at all. They make more money from the Action RPGs and they probably don't have Nioh spergs hating on everything they release because it's not like the original Nioh or whatever, so it's painless too.

What I don't like about RE is how most returning weapons feel worse. They're not necessarily worse, like the scythe is straight up broken because of spam 360 Y, but it feels like shit to use. Spamming one move is boring and the regular strings are weak. NG2's focus on short delimb strings meant more of them could be useful, air Y to capture and then XXY without absorbing essence, wind path into forward X for the insta running X that always delimbs, great move. Air X Y, many hits, you're almost unreachable during it. Forward Y HOLD to throw, can follow up with air combo, fully invincible during it. XYY, usually decapitates. UT is lightning fast, no time for enemies to shower you in IS.
Fast forward to RE, 360 Y spam is probably stronger than all of the above combined, but it's boring.
The DS is AMAZING though, makes up for it and overall RE is a great game, but I wish the weapons felt better. They combined the tonfa and the claws and the result is worse than either, somehow.

That's true, Claw forward Y and swallow into drop made the entire rest of the moveset unnecessary.
I guess the focus on shorter strings gave more purpose to switching for specific encounters and then back while RE's expanded moveset makes it more of a commitment, at least to me.
I use a lot more of my DS moveset in RE than in 2, but on the other hand I didn't cycle through as many weapons in RE as I did in 2. I didn't even bother upgrading all of them.
I like how UT works in RE more than in 2, though, and Steel on Bone is a better system than essence management for easy kills.
Though I do like 4 bringing back essence but also keeping the partial ninpo meter use through bloodraven and gleam, as well as a sort of steel on bone equivalent with the berserker mode. The same principle of healing by bathing in blood done through rally as well.

The movelist in 3 is just too big for me to switch weapons throughout the playthrough. There's too much, it's overwhelming. I hope Ryu's new weapon has a neat new mechanic. Instead of Gleam Mode make it something entirely different, or have some unique property about the strings.
Something that could make Ryu more unique from Yakumo is that if every weapon of his had a different kind of blood raven equivalent mechanic.
