Sony's biggest competitor is going to be laptops and low powered PCs. With diminishing returns, you'll be able to take a midrange non-gaming laptop and run PS6 games in acceptable quality. A lot of people will ask themselves why buy a fucking PS6 is their laptop can run the game already anyway. It's a serious threat to their business model.

Consoles don't matter as much as platforms and big live service games do. I play on Steam and PSN and have big libraries there, so I will continue playing on those platforms. I if install Linux on my computer I will continue playing Steam games. If I buy a Steam Deck or Portable PS6 I will also keep playing the same games I already play.

The real fact of the matter is that traditional consoles are dying; PCs and smartphones are capable of running games and we no longer need dedicated platforms to do it. Furthermore, we no longer have need of a corporation to put their seal of approval on games to ensure quality to the consumer.

Video games are going the direction of something like how movies can be played on a VCR/DVD/BluRay player with no need to be custom tailored to a machine. Graphical leaps are no longer needed as it takes an order of magnitude more power than before to lead to a substantial improvement in visuals. The time for giants like Sony, Microsoft, and at least in the hardware market, Nintendo is over; the rise of digital app stores like Steam on the PC space has overtaken them. There is no more reason to release another Playstation or Xbox.

It pretty much will be Valve, their Decks made Xbox handhelds dead in the water so much so they just outright canceled it and recent leaks show they're gonna try releasing Steam Machine's 2.0 that I'd imagine will be paired with new Steam controllers too with the same goal in mind of bridging the gap between a console like experience on a Desktop. Last time Valve didn't have big picture mode and they ran into patent problems with their first iteration of a controller but it really does look like they've learned from their past mistakes.
Heck you could argue that the Legion Go S is basically Steam Deck 2/3, half of them even run Steam OS but that's just modified version of Arch.

The real question is how will Epic, GOG, and Itch compete because that's Valves real completion.

There's plenty of games that are officially advertised as being Troonix compatible by the devs.
Honestly I'm willing to give up a few WIndows exclusive titles if it means I don't have to see ads in my files manager.
I used to keep a separate hard drive for Windows 7 for whenever I couldn't figure out how to get something to work in Linux but Proton/Wine has come a long fucking way to the were I don't even bother with that anymore.

PC gaming is very much something for enthusiasts that are into tech and your average person doesn't care about specs, software versions/upgrades when they get home from work. Because you can run them on a toaster and need very minimal tinkering needed to get it running (you can run them on a laptop from 2012 perfectly fine). Those types of games are the exception to the rule (since they're pick-up and-play by any metric) whereas most games need newer GPU/CPU iterations, which requires a bunch of changes to your computer the average person doesn't want to deal with.

Also, hordes of Brazilians and Russians play those games for the same reason so you have to account for that too.

There's some systems that have SO much value if you pirate them or if you look for cheap deals. That's the biggest threat to vidya now; why gamble almost a hundred bucks for some mid game when you can grab an old one for free which you know for a fact is good?

Sony has very similar (self-created) problems to Microsoft so my predication is they'll also exit gaming entirely. I know we're supposed to believe ultra-flop after ultra-flop means they're both successful but the part of me with common sense just can't help thinking it's not a sustainable business model.
