There wasn't such thing.
The whole industry was like a digital primordial soup, where you needed to sample things to find your "thing". Arcades were still the masterrace of vidya, with most home systems desperately trying to provide that "arcade-like graphics and gameplay" at home.
Only in Japan was there any sort of real competition between domestic, local companies, with things like PC-98 and MSX providing a bit more mature content out of the box; less rules.
