If I trusted video game reviewers I wouldn't have played many games that I enjoyed. What's more is that every time they led me astray by telling me something that I liked was bad, they praised something that didn't even deserve it by telling me it was good. Me and gaming journos aren't on the save wavelength and I don't believe we ever have been. I don't think that they're good at their jobs, I'm the best judge on figuring out what I want to play. I don't need their reviews, they've provided no benefit to me at any point in my years of gaming.

JRPGs did infamously struggle during this early HD period, however. honestly I think a 7/7.5 for games like Folklore, Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery and Enchanted Arms is probably fair and not far off. Lost Odyssey was probably the only truly excellent JRPG of that early 7th gen home console period. I didn't play Blue Dragon so I won't speak on that.

The publication actually specifically got someone who completely sucks at platformers and had him play the demo. That was by design. It was a joke. So everyone can laugh at how incredibly bad this guy was at platformers.

This is nothing new. I've got old gaming mags where, for example, they get the guy who hates sports games to review a sports game and the review is just him bitching and moaning about how much he hates sports games the whole time.

The biggest problem with JRPGs is just how awful and unimaginative the writing is. The second is how bullshit the gameplay can be.

Remember, we're not talking about western video games. These are japanese video games. Very railroaded stuff. The devs usually plan how you are supposed to do every section of the game and you're supposed to adhere to that plan whether you want to or not. For some jrpg if you don't do things exactly how the devs wants you to you will be brutally punished with bullshit and frustration. This is why JRPGs are not considered real RPGs by experts in the field.

There are not multiple voices telling you what they feel about video games, there is ONE voice pretending to be multiple voices, all saying the same pre-approved message. Critics mainly exist for entertainment purposes. Someone's opinion cannot ultimately decide your opinion, it can only inform your purchase choices. We don't typically go out of our way to watch Ads for advertisement sake. So we only watch them for quick info or entertainment.

Too many critics think their job is less of a blogger or a showsman, and more of a judge or ratings board. These critics' entertainment value is derived all from the audience wanting a certain opinion to be popularized or at least vocalized. No one can have a opinion truly unique, just like no review can be truly complete. So these critics have diminishing entertainment value until eventually all they do is serve as a glorified Ad for a genre of media. And eventually an Ad gets blocked by everyone but the most clueless watcher or listener.

All forms of journalism are fake and gay. And journalists all deserve to be homeless.
