People who hate V3's ending have never engaged with a story more than necessary to pass high school English class. Regardless if you liked the ending, you can't deny that it essentially robs any agency from the characters until the final chapter and making a bad game on purpose smacks of self-righteous if you still charge money for it.
And no it's not up for debate, the game constantly brings attention to the fact that it's bad and the story makes no sense. It's clearly something they wanted you to notice if the characters bring attention to it.

And as the other anon said, technology to remove memories seems fantastical even within the setting. Certainly not mundane. Future Foundation and Hope's Peak were probably the top tech wise but I'm sure the cast lived mostly like our 2010 world throughout their lives besides maybe Chihiro.

To get into Hope's peak academy, you have to already be attending high school and recruited, so everyone is at least in their first year of High School, so minimum 15, likely 16 since I'm sure they would need a year to show that they are HP material. They also could be older and there's nothing stopping an 18 year old from being recruited. (High School in Japan is 3 years)
So the cast is on the upper end of teens, and even Hiro has been held back multiple times and is likely in his early 20s.
There's also no way to prove it so I don't know what you would expect anyone to do, especially with the context where their ages differ from each other potentially so significantly.
