the joke is that Kane was a person, not an object, so there's no cane to immortalize. There was nobody in the movie who prominently used a cane either. At most, the writers just didn't realize that a cane showed up very briefly because it wasn't important.

Yeah you know what? I think the writers just forgot there was a cane in the film. It was easy to overlook because it wasn't an important prop piece by any means but the joke does kind of fall flat in retrospect. The Simpsons even parodied this exact scene almost shot for shot in an earlier episode so it was probably new writers from a later season.

The only thing that would ever cause you to notice the cane in the first place is the fact that Simpsons made a joke about it not existing. Nobody knew about this cane until the Simpsons episode made a joke about its non-existence, which is pretty damning evidence that the cane is not at all prominent or even remotely notable without deliberately searching for it.
