The industry and this board is gaslighting me about how I should like handheld gaming.

I don't. It sucks.

Handheld gaming sets my teeth on edge.
It's the temerity of it.
Handhelds are for people who speak quietly and shrivel up in company. It's an unbelievably arrogant platform.

I think it won't be long until you start to hear game developers moaning about people experiencing their games on these things instead of the "proper" way on a big tv with a controller in your hand.

I kind of agree. A lot of game genres just don't work well on that size of screen.

reliably?
>Retroid 5 (OLED, supports custom Linux OS)
>Konkr (LCD, more powerful than Retroid 5, can run some Switch games)
you probably can even upscale some PS2 games with those.

There are cheaper devices that won't be able to run everything smoothly and of course you can pay more for not that much extra

Steam Deck is massive with the case which makes it kind of a pain in the ass if you actually want to use it as a portable. Chinkhelds come in smaller sizes (Retroid 5 and Mini 2, Anbernic RG series, etc) while still being able to reliably emulate up to Wii and PS2.

I think for the most part they're getting there. They're filling a requirement that both Nintendo and Valve refuse to fill: actual portability. I can't take a Steam Deck on the go because I don't carry a fucking purse and there's not a pants pocket big enough to fit it in.

ARM-based CPU are also insanely power efficient, so, again advantage over the big ones: you get more than 2 hours of gameplay.
Anonymous No.723168142 >>723176394
My daily driver. Does it all, runs windows. Gpd win 4 2023 (4tb 64gb ram model). Has as much ram as the Deck's cheapest storage option. Was as expensive as a laptop because it has as many features if not more. Nothing against Deck owners but this thing is as thick as it has features.

most of these devices are too big to transport comfortably in your pocket, let alone having the additional space to spare.
The boon of those things is that they have decent battery power, easy to setup and are cheap and not something you have to worry too much about breaking or getting stolen

fast charging only kills the battery faster.
Most phones are a pain to change the battery.
But this is besides the point, maybe you just need your phone for something else

>large leap
doesn't feel like it
my first smartphone had a 1500 mAh battery now I have 5100 mAh. battery is easily twice as big and lasts about just as long under normal usage. So it's like a 50% improvement over 15 years
Anonymous No.723174467
Personally, i understand now that using your main phone for gaming can be a bad idea.

That one should be used for calls, messaging, whatsapp, internet, video and music. And maybe the ocassional gacha

If you want to use a smartphone for gaming, you should be buying a second hand one and make a bit of an effort to tune and clean it up if necessary.

If you are dedicated enough and lucky enough, you will surely find a decent used phone at a nice price. Slap a controller of your choice and done!

They can't compete with the deck or valve directly so they need to try to win over other tech nerds who NEED the most impressive shit. Deck is perfectly priced for what it is. There is no space for a competitor. You either need to go chinkheld cheap (<100 USD) or expensive.

It would be cool if one of these retro handhelds supported being used as a generic gamepad for another computer

>use the device when traveling
>get to hotel / house / apartment / whatever

Anonymous No.723183657

If you're talking about handheld PCs (because this is a chinkheld thread), it's because manufacturing costs are expensive. Steam Deck came out underpowered on release with a shit screen and battery and even then Valve stated they had to subsidize and sell it at basically no profit. And they only did that because they want to push linux gayman. If you look at the Deck OLED it's not that far off from the Z1E devices and with the current global climate and tariffs everywhere I doubt the Deck 2 is going to be nearly as fairly priced as the first one.
