FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles
I don't know how to play this game the right way.

What do you mean? Iโ€™m playing through if for the first time and I think there only two major things to avoid so you donโ€™t fuck yourself over:

1. Make sure your generic units compliant Ramzaโ€™s zodiac sign

2. Donโ€™t let Ramza be higher level than your generics

And ALWAYS make back up saves. The game can be tough, and sometimes fights require a specific ability which can result in grinding but otherwise itโ€™s very manageable

>2. Donโ€™t let Ramza be higher level than your generics
Level barely affects anything
When beating Ivalice Chronicles my Ramza was 12 levels higher than the 4 generics I used in every battle

What makes you feel you are playing wrong, anon? Stuck on a certain fight? Are you overleveled for your chapter so random encounters are scaling up higher than your gear? Are you just having your female generics naked and they get smacked down a lot?

I did it on the PS1 and I did it on IC. Mod that shit, I used action replay to make custom characters back in the day and you can use cheatengine to create custom chars in the remaster too. Sword Saint Ramza, Celia and Letties on your team etc.

Like, how do I play this game without grinding all the time? Not that I need power, but I always feel like I'm grinding to unlock some ability. Like, let's take Geomancer as a recent example. I'm a noob, so I don't know what terrain counts as what. So, now I'm going into a random battle to unlock all of the job actions cuz I don't know what does what. Same thing with the math job. I bought one of the actions, went into battle, and I couldn't use it, so now I want to grind it out to unlock everything.

So now I'm level 34 on Ramza while still in chapter 2, and I haven't even met that church guy yet after getting the princess from Delita. My generic NPCs are lower-leveled but still strong enough.

That's the thing. I don't even know what I want. I like trying out all the different jobs until I learn if they suck or not. I could just use a guide, but that's boring. I want to find the fun things on my own. Not just make an OP party to steamroll the game. But I'm now making an OP party that steamrolls the game in my journey to try out everything. Like, I tried out Archer and I thought it sucked ASS, and I never wanted to play it again. So what did it do? I mastered it, so I would never have to play it again. And then I did the same thing with Thief.

Much like >>723170194 was alluding to, the chances of you maxing out every class for a character before you beat the game, or even after, is very slim without grinding. You don't necessarily need to do that though, you are probably leaning a character towards physical attacks or magic, so that cuts down a few.

Geomancers, you can see the ground under a character, I think it used to be Select or something. If you're not literally standing in water it doesn't count as being in water, that sort of thing. Math nerds are dependant on what you are calculating, CT or level or the like, and they use other magic from classes your character has learned, so if you flew past white or black magic and focused on the other abilities, it isn't going to work.

>Donโ€™t let Ramza be higher level than your generics
This is the big thing for me and I've played FFT for years. Ramza is one of the first units who has abilities that can be used at any time (Mettle) with no condition and he's used in every plot battle. At one point I wondered why everyone was doing less damage, moving slower and getting one shotted after making sure their equipment was perfect. Turns out Ramza was 20 levels higher than everyone else and the enemies scaled. This isn't much of a problem until you unlock maps with harder random encounters and the story starts scaling with you.

This last bit isn't true. Story battle enemies are set at certain levels. They don't scale with your party. Random encounters, yes. So grinding your weaker units can get riskier. Monster enemies in story battles, yes. That's why Finnath Creek can be so rough if your party is a really high level. But your standard story battle with human enemies, no.

God they made some incredibly gay choices with this remaster. Why the fuck can't you mass turn on/off AI? Why the fuck do I have to hold down the speed up button? Auto battling gets caught up by poaching, treasure pickups, and crystals. Treasure doesn't even auto loot on completion of battle.

Glad I'm done with all the achievements in this shitter. Everyone just turns into an OP giga unit that can do everything by the end of the game. Great voice acting though.

Luckily I had one save right before the Limberry fight. I was wrong. Elmdore and the assassins weren't level 70. The monsters were all scaled to around that level though so parts of story fights are scaled despite what people said. It's just that Elmdore and the assassins can do super damage and resist level 70 Orlandeu's as if they were level 70.

>>723185135
The assassins are RNG because they get to choose between free Stop attacks, instant kill or charm or ultima but they do have a much higher chance of using ultima if you have a barette on or can resist the other debuffs at least. It's the easiest fight to learn it too since you're just dealing with Reavers and only need to defeat one assassin to end the fight right after.

This. While visually the dark knight is cool the rest of it is not needed. It feels like a blatant way to just print Orlandeaus and stop thinking. I've even heard people justify it as thematically in line with Ramza. What? Because he continuously rejects the darkness of the zodiac stones? Or so he can take on the role of Gaffgarion, a man he respects but ultimately kills because of his nihilism and hopelessness? Or because by the end of the story we're hoping Ramza becomes a doomslayer?

it is actually far more fitting for ramza to be a dualfisting brawler ninja

He rejected the aristocracy and knighthood. (Delita at the very least needs to play the part of templar and then king, Ramza walked away from his family.) He shouldn't be a knight, and almost certainly shouldn't be a dark knight. He never gave into the darkness, he just fights it his own way.

Instead, he went his own way and concocted his own retarded form of martial arts by learning from vagabonds and assassins-for-hire that allows him to repeatedly blitzkreig and overwhelm small armies through sheer force of will.

He never picked up a sword again after Ch1.

The game is still solveable in the same ways if you know what you're doing. Chapter 4 is when enemies on Tactician start to have retarded amounts of HP. But your units are still busted by that point, just like in the OG, so it's not really a huge deal, especially given how many assassination missions there are. I feel like the challenge peaks in Chapter 3 before the good gear unlocks. Self-imposed restrictions are still the best way to make FFT really hard, which is a shame.

Never bothered me that much, probably because I mostly run generics. It's not as if they contribute anything towards the story now anyway. Agrias saying nothing to the final boss vs just having a bit of dialogue that goes "how dare you be evil?" makes little difference to me.
I'd much prefer they fleshed out Delita's scenes or ironed out some questionable plot points.

not very much more. the occasional boss will have a couple of extra points of speed. I played through Tactician and at first I thought maybe enemies got more HP because they seemed to have a lot in Chapter 4, but after checking on other difficulties that seems not to be true. Maybe the Lucavi bosses have more HP on Tactician? If so it wasn't really noticeable. It would be helpful if a list of these supposed changes were available somewhere.
Anyway, it's beside the point, because Anon was clearly referring to difficulty adjustments that are more than just number fudging. Tactician enemies still unfortunately lack the gear and abilities to really match up against a well set up team. My advice for Anon would be to wait for the modders to come up with some encounter scenarios that are actually designed that way. Or try a challenge run where you only use Dragoons or something.

Anonymous No.723225385 >>723225534 >>723225669
>>723223449
Yeah. In TO they beeline to whoever they can inflict the highest damage and is in range. But since there are more fielded units and Rampart Aura is a rather common skill, frontliners tend to fight among themselves for a while and "ignore" squishies because of how their movement range is impaired.
But as soon as the NPC AI can go around that, usually a flier/ranged like Gryphons, they dash to the backline of weaker units.
In practice this doesn't happen 100% all the time.
Been spending more time in TOR the past month than I should and nooticing how the AI behaves.
Anonymous No.723225534
>>723225385
Also when using the AI to control your units they use strong healing items when losing just 1/5 or 1/4 HP but will suicide to a counterattack instantaneously after being revived despite having a full heal in their inventory.
Enemies do spend healing in a retarded way but they can't revive in this version, but I'm pretty sure both enemy and player AI are the absolute same, for obvious reasons.

AI never uses any kind of status effect spell or skill other than Ease, in my experience, even the haste spell.
Only if it's a secondary effect of a damaging ability (Cockatrice's Petro Breath) or an auto skill (Lament of the Dead). Some enemies use Orbs but these are also damaging items with debuff effects embedded.

I was talking about the Reborn version. All CC spells from elemental schools were removed and grouped all into Dark spells.
There are two secret enemies, one an Archer and the other a Swordmaster and the SM still has Petrifog (Earth Element) but I never saw him use it. He just lobs 800 damage stones.
The AI probably used CC too much in previous versions or they couldn't get it to work in Reborn and cut their ability to use it, just like they cut Rogues from the player.

I was just pointing out how it was a weird choice for Reborn. You definitely fad to content with annoying status effects like charm or bewitch in luct but it was perfectly doable.

What are other tactics games as good as FFT on PC?

Caveat: I didn't like Tactics Ogre or Triangle strategy
Anonymous No.723226674
>>723226454
You're right.
Up until the endgame/postgame your gear choices are limited and weapon-wise you're stuck with secondary CC effects, classes do not inherit skills other than weapon proficiency and you can't overlevel content. Especially if you don't play around the dumb cards, because if you do, you'll quickly stack autoproc skills and damage.
Only way later you get access to Shamans, summons and relics. And relic farming is very tedious. Only then you overpower the game and by then there isn't much to be done anyway. It's still cool to humiliate lv71 bosses in CODA4 before it gets old.
So in a sense it can be way harder than FFT, a game you're free to mix, match and grind, but I'd wager their AI is equally dogshit, it's just that the player has less of an advantage in Tactics Ogre.

There's probably something to be said about a limited scope and simple graphics forcing you to polish what you have really well.
