I doubt by 'love' the game meant literal romantic love, but rather the capacity to love anything. Love is a very nebulous term, it can mean a ton of things depending on context, and Miquella's story was not one of romantic love.

The entire reason he got rid of her is that her love for Miquella undermined his efforts to purify (and thus "cage") himself for the benefit of the world. I don't think most of the Elden Ring characters are strictly 'evil'. Dung Eater, Godrick, Rykard, sure. The devs didn't bother to come up with an actual character for Miquella, they just had the theme of "abandons his love" in mind. But because Miyazaki is either incredibly apathetic or incompetent when it comes to storytelling, they didn't show us Miquella abandoning his love, or even tell us the actions he performed that constituted abandoning his love, they literally just have a fucking lore drop in the world that SAYS he abandoned his love. I know this is 100% on Miyazaki because if GRRM is good at anything, it's creating compelling characters. Yet, somehow, Miquella is a total abortion of a character with absolutely no coherent set of actions or motivations. You can't find anything he does that isn't contradicted by something else he does.
