It is amazing how many features from gen 2 were dropped in gen 3. Even as a kid I thought it was jarring.

The GOAT pokemon games were Soul Silver, Heart Gold and Platinum. Simple as.

This is why romhacks are great. Fans can finish the games that GF did not. Pretty sure hacks have added day/night cycle to pokeemerald.

>simple but effective animations for each Pokemon as they came out
>day/night cycle with soulful lights on in the cities
>special split
>items
>stat exp system basically guarantees even shitty mons can eventually be great
>events like bug catching contest
>learnsets from low levels, Pokemon no longer only start learning moves at the level you would catch them in the wild
>elemental punches available in Goldenrod, right around the time of the third gym
>only mainline game to actually let you go back to a previous region before KANTOOO pandering reached retarded levels
>can actually get a fair number of mons that were only available later on in the adventure earlier on
>first game to implement a Battle Tower of some kind, even if it's bare bones
>could pair it with Pokemon Stadium 2 so you had a reason to actually raise a legitimate team
>etc. etc.
It's definitely one of the strongest Pokemon games and felt like the time when Game Freak was starting to get the hang of making the games.

Day/Night cycle is probably the most overrated mechanic in pokemon. It's fucking shit to gate stuff by time when you don't have all 24 hours available to play. If you're going to make things like this don't actually make it 1:1 with real life hours.
>you can change the ingame timer
I hate that I'm forced to do that to begin with.

Just so you know it's 2-3 schizos spamming threads here and on /vp/ trying to provoke genwars. Next time just ignore them

The opponent's pokémon were absolutely disastrous in this game. Especially the gym leaders. Crystal had the potential to change the Gold & Silver mistakes but fell short terribly.

> You can literally find hoothoot in the first tall grass
Gym leader uses only Kanto shit with a massively cheated lv 9 pidgeotto because they desperately wanted the flying gym to be the first. Could've been the third gym with a Noctowl, but no.
> Unevolved bugs for #2 followed by a useless Scyther
As if you needed another argument not to pick chikorita (worthless shit), you now have the second disadvantaged gym, but the first two bugs are unevolved and none of the 3 have remotely any useful attacks. Again, only kanto. If put later in the game, could've used Ariados, Forretress & Scizor.
The only well-done gym leader. Miltank is a signature Johto pokémon. Forces you to either overlevel, get Gastly or a Machop.
> Kanto ghost spam
I get that the only other alternative was Misdreavus... BUT WHY NOT USE IT?! Why two haunters when you literally have that new little shit?!
> Fighters again confirm the gymdevs had a massive kantoboner and apparently hated all the new shit?
Where's the new fucking heracross that would've been too powerful for the bug gym? It would've been excellent here!
> Two AIDS-strat magnemites
Why not one offensive magneton and idk? Scizor? Skarmory?
> Seel instead of Jynx? I get why Sneasel was left out because it's useless in gen 2 & 3. Makes me wonder where they were with their heads not realising the physical/special split needed to be based on moves instead of types from gen 1 onwards.
> TRIPLE dragonair spam
Dragonite is too powerful for an 8th gym, so maybe we should make it a different type? There's surely no way we're going to fight a champion who spams 3 dragonites right? *foreshawing* RIGHT????!!!

Sorry not sorry. The devs were high on fent-laced meth when they made these team compositions. Visually it was a good game. Gameplay itself was trash.

The worst part is you go on this massive adventure across mountains and seas after Ecruteak and the strongest pokemon in gym 7 go up like six levels. I'm pretty sure you could turn off XP gain entirely and only level using Rare Candies and you'd still gain six levels on your starter in that time.

Gen 2 has amazing sprites...and that's it. Everything else sucks.

did the pack of homos who made Crystal Legacy add the safari zone yet like they kept saying they would or is that pipedream over, I held off playing it because of that

>shit pokemon and type distribution; at least a third of the new mons are inaccessible until the very end of the game, also enjoy having exactly 1 dark type before kanto lol
>terrible plot that ends with anticlimactic battle against a literal who admin who doesn't even get a name until the equally as shit remake 11 years later
>most gym leaders don't even use the new Pokemon
>elite 4 starts at level 40, not only making it the lowest elite 4 start by 6 levels, but meaning that you wont be able to use some of your favourite pokemon (ex Dragonite) until half way through the postgame without sweeping every gym
>evolution item distribution is terrible
>still fighting level 25 shitmons in the grass all the way through the postgame kanto
>Kanto is barren as fuck with most things gutted outright and the gyms are a cakewalk with lower levels than the elite 4 you just beat
Johto is poorly designed dogshit and Crystal is easily gamefreak’s laziest singular release. Fixed fuckall flaws from the original GoySlop, added some little gay animated sprites, removed Mareep, and gutted half the Japanese exclusive content before localizing it (gs ball, online support, etc).
Shit games with trash pokemon in a boring region made up entirely of small linear grassy routes and unrewarding caves, full of underleveld Kanto mons from the first route to just before you’re fighting Red, awful encounter methods, horrible evo stone distribution. The only people who defend these trash games are fat balding retards who played it when they were 3.

Gen 3 was when they started over designing. If Groudon was in gen 1 or 2 he wouldn't have all the spikes on the side of his body.

Fucking where? Until the Yokai Watch babyshit in Gen 6 or whatever, Gen 3 had the lamest dex by far.
