you think mmos will still be around in 10-15 years?
you think it's really just gonna be wow, xiv, osrs, and the other few relatively big ones forever?
Anonymous No.723190741 [Report] >>723191105 >>723194843
Wow and FF are both dying. They disabled cheating in wow now everyone is struggling to play the game rather than macro. They added troons to ffxiv so they all abandoned it. OSRS will be dead after streamers move on to the next thing.
Anonymous No.723190810 [Report]
I hope they die forever
Stupid fucking genre has ruined more franchises (Warcraft, Diablo, Phantasy Star) than it has fixed.

surely they'll just have their cultist fanbases after and they can just downscale servers and dev support
sunken cost basically guarantees said fans will accept whatever
i mean, fucking maplestory is still around and apparently thriving despite not being AS big as WoW but almost just as old

How badly would WoWtards crash out if they suddenly shut all the servers down?
All those pixels they have been grinding for since their teenager years just gone forever and they have nothing to show for it

there's always private servers for mmos that got axed or are basically dead, was surprised to learn that Tera is still kicking it with a few of their own
though im sure there'd be a few suicides over wow

they'll probably still be around, but I don't expect there to be much improvement
the sad reality is that mmos are not and were never good, they were just social media with a mediocre video game attached
playing anything else while on discord provides a nearly identical experience except with a way better game
the one thing mmos have going for them at this point is that there isn't much else in the realm of persistent multiplayer rpgs, the second we get a non-shit version of Vindictus or something it's fucking ogre for this whole genre

i honestly wouldnt mind something with BDO or Tera's combat but with smarter AI and a single player experience, so none of that nickel dime forever grind gookshit attached

Modern MMOs are essentially just live-service games like Destiny and Diablo with a different payment model these days

Been playing XI for the last 6 months after a 15 year hiatus. I still think the mechanics are great but god its depressing how much of a light co-op this game has become, from when it used to be a place where everybody was connected for better or worse.

I wonder how much of my enjoyment is coming from the game as it currently is and how much is just because I remember how things used to be.

Meanwhile the private servers aren't fun because everyone refuses to play with you if you don't build your character in one specific way

Yeah, Tera dropped the ball hard with monetisation. It was a great game. If it was just a sub, and all that cash shop shit had been worked into content (and it's not hard to just release new areas using existing assets), people would still be playing. There are MMOs with much worse gameplay that did do this, that have stuck around.

XIV has awful gameplay, but they get by on this and pandering to western media trends.

I cant get into WoW because they'd like to make unobtainable items more and more each patch. There werent many of this say until WOTLK and still really until the very end of MoP. Then after that, more and more uncollectibles which was fine. Followed by a very dead expansion that was BFA that removed many mechanics only to be reintroduced. Into a following expansion that is the shadowlands that was just a bit boring. Something about it felt off. The zones and enemmies were just not very iconic.

They need to stop having 'twitch drops' and uncollectibles. I'm not paying a subscription just to get those things. Given my circumstances, WoW would be an excellent time for me to join in but I flat outright refuse. Make a WoW 2 or a different MMO and I 'll play again. Stop making items unobtainable and if you do, make it very few and special items. Dont just make it every patch some unobtainable items. ...

Rather get better at RTS than WoW given my free time. Oh and dont forget, those games becom, ing more and more streamer centric did kill it in a way. They're better of making a WoW 2 at this point. They say they wont everytime. I just tell them to fuck off. I'm not playing wow until WoW 2 comes out.

Try being a new player and play that game. BFA really has a lot of scars in that game. I didnt even play it, but while levelling you tell it has a terrible influence. Btw, I like WoD, Legion, Mop, Cata, WOTLK, dragonflight to an extent but i got out after release. When you're raiding, you're either in it for the expansion or just fuck off to a differnet game.

Well they have leaked the potential new Pokemon MMO in development earlier today, so we're doomed to themeparks and cash shops til the end of time most likely while some smaller ones just exist like EVE / EVE Frontier and older ones like XI and TOR until Disney rips that license away.

They're dying. I'm most curious to see what's gonna happen to all these games once they do. DQX was an interesting experiment in creating an offline version of an MMO, no idea if it succeeded. They might just sit as eternal zombie F2P MMOs like a lot of games, but I feel like the bigger cash cows will still get corporate attention. It'll be an interesting future, regardless.

probably. the features of the genre have all split off into more focussed genres and attempts to fully reunite them seem to flop and very half-baked.

the persistent worlds are in survival stuff like conan, ark, rust
playing roles in a team in hero shooters like Overwatch
raid mechanics and progression style in ARPGs like lost ark
and now we even have the dungeons and tighter experiences in games like Fellowship and Wayfinder.

now people's hopes are pretty much all on ashes of creation, which looks like the most generic and uninspired PoS i've ever seen.

and one of the biggest issues in the investment people already have in old ones like WoW and OSRS. it's hard to start a long journey all over from the start when devs are so fucking incompetent and everything is early access alpha quality these days.
the fact that they all feel worse than WoW is like an instant fail. only really FF14 managed to capture a large slice of the pie, despite having dogshit networking and gamefeel, because japs are at least good at overall aesthetic quality and keeping people hooked on episodic filler stories.
Anonymous No.723198462 [Report]
unless something profoundly innovative comes out, it pretty boils down to what game people settle into most comfortably
for me, i just flip flop between singleplayer vidya and 1-2 mmos whenever i get the itch to play them again
nothing new is going to convince the people that are left to move and leave their old game behind to try something new
the people who dipped earlier were just smart enough to see that the good designs found in mmos can be found in other games without having to deal with the baggage that mmos come with
