I think this game is at its best in the early/mid game. By the time you get double sectopods per mission, and all of your guys are stacked with abilities and utility, I think it gets too boring.

You are not a drone. You are not part of a hive.
You miss playing it. Go play it.
I missed playing W40K Chaos Gate, and i played it twice, and liked it. And this is the second time only in this year I mention it to somebody.

Whoever is posting this new wave of xcom threads, please note:

Yes, we like xcom
Yes, even the bitter anons that claimed to not enjoy the new xcom games in reality bought both of them and their expansions and enjoyed them a lot.
Yes, both XCOM:EW and XCOM:WotC were way better than the base games and basically saved them

So you need to be careful, but, speaking for /v/, if you make more GOOD xcom games in Jake Solomon's style:
we absolutely will buy them,
we absolutely will create positive groundswell,
we absolutely will be stoked because there aren't many games like it,
and we absolutely will make tons of lewd mods to attract new players.

If you half ass it though youre going to lose a lot of money.

Now go back to your corporate overlords and report and get whoever is Jake's successor a budget. A good one faggot

Ever since playing the Wasteland games and JA3, I feel very spoiled with action points. Mechanically I wish any future XCOM would use that system instead. Speaking of that I didn't mind what Chimera Squad tried to do, but not having any way to influence the turn timeline with your gear or breaching choices was really dumb on their part.

>>723193738
I think Commander feels the most balanced personally. The two biggest things are having good utility (e,g. mind shields vs warlock, a couple mimic beacons for if shit really hits the fan).
Second is knowing what enemy abilities are on the board. If I have an encounter with a sectoid, two troopers and a shieldbearer let's say, my priority is going to be the troopers first. The shieldbearer is almost certainly going to run to cover and shield up, and the sectoid will 99% of the time try to make a zombie out of a dead trooper. That kind of thing applies to a lot of enemies. Archons will try to use pinions immediately, Codexes like to use their grav well that disables weapons, Vipers like to tongue grab immediately. Knowing what the AI is likely to do with their units lets you plan around the fight.
With XCOM 2 as well, you're expected to play fast and scrappy, you won't often get a perfect encounter and you'll need to take bad fights out of position all the time. Having a lot of utility to stall a turn or break cover is essential in this game. Keep moving forward as often and as soon as you can, go for flanks always, the AI will always try to reposition when its out of cover or flanked and if you have it in a crossfire situation where it can't avoid a flank then sometimes the AI will outright skip its turn.

XCOM 2 is pretty manageable on L/I.
The only hard things are Gatecrasher and the first Retaliation and you can technically fail it and be fine(ish). After that Mag weapons are in sight.

Now XCOM 1 on I/I is just groin abuse at the start. Even the devs admitted they made it bullshit since they didnt know how to make it harder any other way. 6HP thin mints are just pure rape until lasers and even then they'll fuck you at times.

if this was marketed as a spinoff phonegame or small expansion without the cringe writing (like, any writing at all)
it would've been fine

the game is ok, except for the overarching death/chaos counter being way too easy to counter

it's just not the big main course sequel people wanted (and yes, the writing and some art was fucking cringe)

I thought the breach mechanic and more chaotic small rooms meshed well with the more chaotic turn mechanics per individual unit
it made the game feel different enough

wow
i doubt they were anything challenging anyway considering final mission was a cakewalk

What I mean is that, a lot like JA3, certain attacks will trigger status effects, bleeding, concussions, blinding, you can add elemental damage to ignite, freeze, etc. some perks can then interact with those status effects to deal more damage or apply a different status. How you go about building your team, the weapons you give them, can change your entire approach to fights because some weapons can guarantee certain effects.

Have you played a Long War mod before? It's basically a free expansion made by fans. The devs of Xcom EW called their own game a tutorial for Long war.
LWOTC is the same, it makes the Chosen more competent it gives them new actions, abilities, missions, ways to attack your havens.
It's just a straight up improvement over the base game but it does come with increased difficulty and play time. This is where you have to master the strategy layer to win.

Yeah, I remember. That's how much I paid for it. I remember seeing that and being filled with an uneasy sense of dread.
Why would they launch a new XCOM game for $10? The previous ones were great and worth every penny I paid for them. Why would this one be so cheap? I shouldn't worry about it. It's still XCOM. It'll be great!
It was not great. It was so fucking far from great.

Why though? XCOM was a hit. EW made it even better. XCOM2 was an even bigger hit. The DLCs made it even better. The franchise was on fire. Internally, the suits should have been begging the team to make an XCOM3 game and print them free money.

I like Marvel, but that doesn't mean I like everything Marvel. I'm not going to pretend like the original batch of Marvel movies weren't good because contrarians like to shit on them now. However, for me, those movies topped off at the 1st Avengers movie. I know most normies were just getting excited for the new thing at around that point, but even for the normies, Avengers 3 was a very clear signal that the Marvel fad is over.
For the non-normies like me who liked Marvel, we're burnt out. We liked what Marvel was, not what it is now. Normies will always chase the new fad. They don't actually care about it. They just want to fit in and feel like they belong or are popular because they also pretend to like what is popular. For the rest of us though, we saw the thing we like change to appease the normies. Now the thing we liked, is no longer the thing we liked. Marvel is on a huge downward trend now and executive suits are too delusional to acknowledge it.

For the longest time I hated Terror from the Deep. I hated the color pallete, I hated the goofy Seamen art direction... It wasnt until I stumbled upon a Ben and Lewis save the world playthrough of it, where they had their units inside a dark cave underwater at the bottom of the ocean surrounded by nothing but darkness and those brain things that turn your humans into zombies, that I realised that Terror from the Deep is possible the scariest fucking Xcom ever. I hope to god Xcom 3 is a soft reboot of it.

Coming off of Wasteland 2 at the time, I actually really enjoyed the breaching and timeline mechanics it had, I just didn't think it did enough with them. There should've been ways to influence your timeline position off of the breach and with your equipment, instead of it purely being ability based. Making the characters set in specific roles was a bad idea too I think, several of the characters were the best in slot but were fucking insufferable to listen to.

It turns it into an actual resistance experience with an extremely intricate strategy layer and a lot more tools to use in the tactical layer.
Everything is revamped with more depth like class builds where individual soldiers stats/xcom row perks dictate how they're built, research is padded out a bit more to make weapon damage scaling more linear instead of massive power spikes, a number of new enemies to flesh out roles for advent.

The biggest turn off for most people is the strategy layer; the game doesn't hold your hand telling you what missions to do when and in the original LW2 obfuscated a number of game-overs that LWOTC fixes, but a lot of people get 50 hours in and didn't even realize they lost the game 30 hours ago with 2 tremendous fuck ups.

Personally I can't play the game without it but I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea losing until you don't. it also doesn't fix waterworld being the most unfun dogshit

Honestly, even though I'd be disappointed, I'd just be happy to have another XCOM. Personally I think the best way to go about making an XCOM 3 is to have it set after victory with the world devolving into a myriad of different factions vying for control that XCOM has to either destroy or incorporate into a united faction, with the option to recruit or destroy any deserted alien straggler groups you come across.
