Zoomer here. Can someone explain to me why these things are so coveted?
Don't we have better tech now?

Less input delay
Durability
Visuals were designed around CRT limitations

What CRTs? They have near zero input delay and they don't have pixels, so basically infinite resolution. On top of which, because of the way the phosphor screen responds to the electron guns, it creates much smoother graphics so the edges between colors is a lot smoother and more gradual.

Old things were made with those screens in mind so they don't look as good when put on a modern screen.

People want more Yoshi games like Yoshi's Island for the SNES. With better tech, bigger and better games should be possible. The Yoshi games they have been making don't scratch the same itch.

CRTs? Basically what >>723201823 said. In addition, it's what all the games of that era were made for so you need them to get the original experience, like what >>723201834 said.

Real 02 Zoomer here.
I played N64 games on a CRT when I was younger, even played Gamecube and Wii games on one. When I switched to a regular LCD.
I noticed no real difference.
This is because I am not autistic enough to care enough about this retarded shit.

Old game look gud on old screen.
They look especially gud on high TVL monitors like the one in your pic, but not many of us actually played games like that back then.

Projection, I don't care about that.
I'm here telling a fellow zoomer that it makes no difference and it's just lard asses holding onto nostalgia.

Honestly I was alive when everybody had a CRT and I remember we all wanted to upgrade to a "flatscreen" which is what we called the modern monitors back then because we were all used to thick monitors like that. Flatscreens were supposed to be an upgrade that was better and thinner.

I think most of the people who buy CRTs in the 2020s are probably zoomers who want to feel nostalgia for a time period they weren't even alive for. IDK. I think CRT has more soul than the flatscreens though so I guess that's the only appeal it would have for me I guess. But I use a flatscreen now though lol.

CRTs simply present differently from fixed-pixel displays. 3D content is a mixed bag, but 2D is infinitely better on a tube telly.

40 year old boomer here. Flat screens are a gift to mankind. These TVs were way to fucking heavy and often only had one input so if you wanted to switch between cable and video games you had to go behind the TV and break your back trying to swap composite cables. Shit is even worse if you have more than one console. Sure you can buy a switcher but they were as big as a DVD player and you're already hurting for room with huge ass TVs, cable boxes, DVD/VCR combo players, consoles, all your VHS/DVD tapes, video games, books etc. I had a tiny ass room I felt so cramped with a giant entertainment center taking up 30% of the room.

It is nice to see LCDs finally not have shitty colors or sluggish response times. I’ll probably always keep a CRT around but do feel that as of the last five years or so that most LCD and LED panels finally look really good.

They're pretty colorful and make low res pixel art not look like shit.
Also the motion quality trounces LCD.
However OLED can get pretty close to all that.

A lot of CRT TVs have geometry issues, and PVMs/BVMs tend to have less geometry issues because they were made to a higher standard. They aren't always perfect.

No one was playing games on them back in the day because they were worth $$$$$$ but when they were replaced some of them made it out to the public via lot auctions or people took them home from their jobs, and so they are rare.

If you can get one cheap, go for it.

PC monitors are a very good compromise and you can get as good or better images out of them than PVMs and are more plentifully available. You can't just plug a console into them (except for Dreamcast) but you can do cool things on them with a retrotink or a mister or something. You can also just plug a HDMI>VGA into them and run modern PC games on them, and it will still be better than any 666fps bullshit gaming monitor you have. Aim for getting a 19" one because they can take higher resolutions. I'm using one right now and it takes 1600x1200@75 and frankly just looks incredible.

Motion clarity is an underrated quality of them and is in my opinion the reason you should get them. You just don't know what you're missing until you see it in person.

Infinite FPS and zero lag. A CRT can display frames nearly as quickly as a device hooked up to it can output them, because there's no processor inside and it just scans whatever it was sent to the screen.

I'll also point out that while color CRTs do have a mask (which does act somewhat like pixels) a black-and-white CRT does not. So black-and-white could actually get resolution as small as you want, depending on the vertical display lines.

There WAS a kernel of truth on that.
Despite the defects, the actual mastering of the songs were not done by apes that just crush the volume to 11 and half just to make the song "louder" for no retarded reason.
However newer vinyls are mastered by the same idiots, so you get crushed audio AND crackles and pop.s

>Don't we have better tech now?
As someone who works in tech support: lol no.
Technology is regressing in the weirdest way possible. It's technically faster, but it's packed with so much fucking bullshit that you end up spending the same as if not more time on the same tasks. Look at the modern games that look no better than RDR2 and run at a fraction of the performance. Look at Windows 11 and the impossible task it is to set up the OS quickly or efficiently, and offline. Look at fridges and washers and TVs with AI.

Technology has not gotten better. It's gotten more corporate.

It's pretty amazing. When I was younger I was stumped by the idea of technology regressing like in WH40k, but now I'm seeing it happen in real time. Maybe civilization reaches some sort of collective memory limit, and knowledge starts being lost as a result, disrupting the continuum of progress.

At some point the companies learned that was easier to just point the marketing department in the investor direction instead of the public, and things such as profit and company sustainability became secondary.

We wanted flatscreens because CRTs are heavy, take up huge amounts of space and all have the high pitched scream.
People also just want to flex the biggest screen possible. Can't get a 100" CRT.

They absolutely have issues which are dealbreakers for alot of people. But the softer picture and less harsh glow is much nicer than modern LED chinkshit.
