Definitely. Play all the GBA and DS FE games. They begin declining on DS, but no bottoming out. If you still want more, try ROM hacks from the GBA games. A good chunk of them are surprisingly solid.

It's a solid start for the series and obvs where all the FE fans outside JP got started with until Awakening blew it up and then 3Houses exploded it into the public's consciousness.
Wouldn't say the series is fully pozzed (newest game withstanding) as much as it was censored into oblivion with the 3DS games and just got really stupid. Fortunately the 3DS games all have patches, unfortunately they're were old fags like me think the series just jumped off the cliff.
If you come from the FFT side of things, it may not have as much unit customization as you may be used to. Series creator more or less came from the War Gaming x DnD mindset so it's a bit more of a classic RPG in that regards. And if you've played any tactics games before, Lyn's route starts kind of slow. But stick with it and it's a pretty solid 7/10 experience and will give you a good idea where to approach the series (ie into the more customization side of things vs the more fixed characters/RPG side of things). The simplicity is part of the charm.

I beat that game and sacred stones in 3rd grade
as an adult you will probably find them slow and easy
I tried a few newer ones as an adult
I liked the Tear Ring Saga ps game better desu

Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS) is when the series started becoming a dating sim. The games following it, both FE Fates (3DS) and the Switch games, involved a lot more on story and character interactions than on an excuse to play the maps. I'm guessing that's what you mean, so everything pre-3DS is what you're looking for.

You've got three games on GBA (Fire Emblem, FE: Sacred Stones, and an untranslated JP-only game that came out before the other two) along with one game on Gamecube and its direct sequel on Wii. The GBA games and the Gamecube game are pretty good. I didn't play the Wii game so I'll let others comment on it.

There's also Shadow Dragon, a remake of FE1 on DS, and a remake of FE2 on 3DS, if you don't want to play the originals of those games.

the gba games are great. basic gameplay with a lot of depth and the sprite work is very impactful. once you get to the 3ds era they start adding stuff because games have to be bigger and it just gets bloated.
