Spikeout manages to create a deep and extremely repayable combat system without the usual modern design crutches of parries, i-frame dodges, and of course, progression systems. Instead, the progression of Spikeout is contained within the level and enemy design, which ultimately feels more meaningful. It answers the question, "What happens at the end of the progression system?" perfectly. One of the big answers is the game's emphasis on natural spacing and hitbox interaction, and another is insisting that the player understand the principal of frame advantage, in a very similar manner as Nitaku in Virtua Fighter.

Played xbox version. Games controls handle like shit and feel like something from the previous generation. Sorta like a worse Shenmue if you can believe it. Felt like a quarter muncher too.

Lack of progression systems puts pressure on the player to learn and fully utilize the systems rather than accumulating power via number big. Progression isn't inherently bad, but it is very often badly implemented in action games.

Frame advantage against CPU is stupid
Nitaku or just the idea of putting your opponent in 50/50 situation work in fighting games because you're actually reading off your fellow human being.

Putting CPU in guessing scenarios for one it's just a lie. But besides that it's not nearly as satisfying as putting an actual living breathing person. That's why no one treats arcade mode in fighting games as anything more than novelty

I guess, I think that's intentional because the difficulty curve of the level progression is hand in glove with the power curve of the player character. What happens with lazy rpg lite progression is that what you would start with in the action game is locked behind a level, so the beginning of the game's levels/enemies is way easier than it needs to be, to the point where it doesn't really get fun (or cool) until you're too close to the end. Someone could try to merge the best of both worlds, but it doesn't usually happen.

Theres something to the roguelite thing they do, Ive played a handful and they can be good in different ways. I just find it inferior to traditional progression because they always make fewer levels in total, where in return you tend to replay those levels way more than you would in a normal game.

My issue is that spikeout also has zero difficulty progression until like the very last area of the final level, and even then it goes from balls to the wall difficult to actual, genuine "ok you're done playing" levels of punishment. The game expects you to intricately know every mechanic right from the get go.

Spikeout and most other beat em ups fall into the trap of requiring a very tedious playstyle in order to succeed

I played it a few years ago. Got to the first boss, died, then it put me back to the very start if the level. Turned it off there and then. Arcade design is so tedious because you know that's all yiu be doing all game. I don't agree with "gameplay density" at all.
