I wouldn't make a mascot horror game at all unless I'm very starved for money

"mascot horror" isn't even a genre, it's just a trope derived from the recent trend where icons associated with childhood are almost arbitrarily seen as scary/horror related. It started with simple enough shit like possessed dolls and killer clowns but now ever since shitty creepypastas and especially FNAF anything vaguely seen as "for kids" is an untapped well of horror waited to be squeezed for cash. Haunted kid's shows, haunted video games, haunted theme parks, haunted children's entertainment restaurants. It's just the same "twist" over and over again. That isn't to say none of them are good, but it's like asking "how would you fix the magical negro trope?" It's not something that needs to be fixed because that implies it's necessary that it becomes a mainstay instead of what it is, a fad that pops up and dies out. There's no point to "fixing" it.

i don't know why cuckchanners still bitch about cartoon horror when it's pretty much fucking dead.

the last cartoon horror in 5 years with barely any fucking notoriety is that rofucks dandy world shit and that is more cute/ironic than actual horror.

It's fucked from the ground up. I would just forgo being horror and make an action game where cute things transform into cool things and dismember each other.

I don't care what /v/ thinks, these games are kino.
There isn't one "genre" of mascot horror but it's nice to play something reasonably spooky with some unique gameplay ideas, then be able to enjoy the characters like they're normal cartoons, or read about the lore and all the different ideas they play with.
There is nothing wrong with a game that appeals to multiple demographics.

The movies were popular with an under-R rated audience though. Some musician made a song about watching a Friday the 13th movie with friends when he was a kid.

Although there are no statistics so there's no way to be sure, I suspect those series were more popular with teens/pre-teens than they were with adults. I'd bet that's the same age range that's most a fan of mascot horror too.

I have hope for Poppy 5, it looks super promising already.
They're putting the focus on an actual monster with a well defined character and impact on the plot already. I like The Prototype a lot, he's cunning and terrifying in ways not a lot of villains get to be these days. If they just give him his due they have an amazing send off to their game.
