These games are ridiculously easy with guides, you realize how much they rely on being intentionally confusing.

No it isn't, it's a story written by someone who thinks their audience is too retarded to pick up on simple themes, and smashes them over the head with it explaining what's going on in detail instead of letting the actions speak for themselves. The main complaint I hear about this game is how stupid the MC is, and the MC is written to be stupid because the writers thought their audience would be too stupid to understand the plot and so they had to spell everything out for you. It's got really cool concepts, but the writing is genuinely terrible.
>>723207893
They had a great marketing campaign leading up to the actual announcement and release of the game with some live action SCP style interview videos, sadly the story unironically peaked with those.

The worst part about the story is they present you with technology that has stored simulations of real people, still functioning technology that can make seemingly infinite shit, including physical bodies to move a contained conciousness and instead of giving you the logical option of trying to intentionally meld the two so as to rebuild humanity from "brain in jar" tech, they tell you to shut off the only piece of tech that gives a chance of salvaging the situation, and jettisoning the other brainscans into deepspace where they'll burn out eventually or impact with a rock.
>>723211210
because they wrote the fucking answer to the situation of using the wau to give all the brainscans bodies and decided to the absolute dumbest fucking thing instead. It didn't have to revolutionize anything, it had to tell a good story that didnt' have gaping logic holes and treat the player like a lobotomized retard. The WAU is uncontrollable and extremely unpredictable. You have no way of knowing if giving it access to the brain scans would result in it making more Simons or if it's going to do something that will torment them for eternity instead because it thinks it's the correct course of action.

The WAU created Simon II for two reasons
>it is experimenting with putting brain scans into any robot it can in an attempt to create life
>it needs the reactors in Upsilon that the human survivors shut down to be brought back online
Anonymous No.723214560 [Report] >>723257915
>>723214094
Yeah, that's why I kinda regret poisoning WAU. There certainly is the chance that the WAU doing it's random bullshit could create some form of humanity that at least has it's existence based moreso in the physical world that being mind-scans on a satellite, but like mentioned before, it seems to drive most people crazy and/or just completely fuck up any future prospects survivors had in favor of "stabilizing" them. Simon and Catherine being sane seem to be exceptions to it's machinations.
On the flip side, killing the WAU probably saves all the non-human life that it appeared to be devouring to get more mass for... whatever it was doing. The slim chance of spitting out the occasional human meat-puppet or scanner researcher at the expense of all other biological life (that's recovered from disasters like comets before) seems a bit of a gamble.

Cath says she had to basically invent the consciousness thing for her project, and she got the inspiration for it from a WAU invention. If brain scans always behaved like people the WAU making something that could simulate a conscious person wouldn't be that significant.
And Simon III works because it's copying the "upgraded" Simon II, not the base Simon I

The Brandon bit really irked me because Simon and Catherine go through so many iterations where they just delete the simulation to start it up again but the very last one features Catherine just going, "btw I'm not your girlfriend, k bye," instead of just cutting the simulation off right when she gets the encryption key.
And then hands off the responsibility of deleting Brandon to Simon. What the fuck?
Also, even with WAU's rampart growth, I don't think it'd be able to just run trillions of Simon simulations. That's a fuckin' lot. And why would WAU torture him? The one time Simon got plugged in by the WAU Simon got put into a dream state where his deceased girlfriend was alive.

You can go back and kill the previous iteration of Simon, but it's fully apparent that you are playing as the new copy. The Star Trek comparison has the original vanish and asks if the teleported person is truly the original or if they are a new copy with identical memories and whether or not there is a philosophical difference. Well look at the bright side, there's some home. When Simon's battery runs out, he doesn't really die. He just goes to sleep. There's no knowing if he'll wake up yet again in a million years if some new race or alien visitors discovers his cortex chip protected in all the structure gel in his body. If he really wanted, maybe he could figure something out. He can climb the orbital space gun to get closer to the surface and atleast enjoy a view, or he can try to use some of his structure gen to repair his omnitool and find a way to return to one of the prior sites.

I hadn't considered the possibilty of "slowboating" up the gun rails. How much power is in that little powerpack though? Even if he did make it to the surface, could he find something to recharge it? I dunno what kind of view there'd be to enjoy though, probably still too much ash for that.
Banking hope on future alien archaeologists is a bit of a stretch, especially at the bottom of the ocean. Maybe climbing the gun and running out of power up top is actually a good idea... until that sinks too.
I still think the most hopeful scenario is the WAU just gets it's shit together (provided it's still alive). Risk to sea-life aside, it seemed to be congregating around some of the thermal vents at the ocean floor, so there's some aspect of it that's seeking alternative power generation.

Couldn't they have set up the transfer to be bit-by-bit? Like, it deletes the data that gets transfered in chunks so it feels more like a sensation of transferring over during the connection? There's an argument for the WAU. I guess then it depends on if the WAU ate Simon's hand or not. (Shouldn't that have caused his suit to implode from water pressure?).

There's a short story in the game files about one of the crewmembers climbing the space gun actually. Says it took like 4 hours iirc. They died at the surface, but not immediately. I it confirms that the surface is unlivable though.

Simon is filled with structure gel. I have to imagine There's a way he could use it to find some way to recharge his battery. That or atleast recharge his omnitool then leave and try to find WAU and hope it can save his ass. I will be honest, I don't know why Ross wanted to hill him, or what he meant about him being immune.

There will never be a time that you sit down for the brain scan, that you will ever do anything else other than stand up upon the conclusion of the brain scan.
The copy will remember all of this as well, but it will never be anything but the copy. The copy doesn't even automatically upload into anything. It's a computer file. It only even resembles a coin flip because of our transfer of perspective, which is a gameplay experience, not something that happens in the game itself.

In the game, when you transfer over to another machine or "suit", when you are in the new one, you remember just playing on the old one.

Of course, this is because you were just playing the game when the character was in the previous body, as it's just a game and not real. However, it illustrates perfectly how it would feel like a transfer if it was real and from the copy's pov, it would feel like a transfer.

You know what will happen before you take the brain scan, but just after it's taken and before you know where you are, it is a coin toss.

you can't "transfer" anything with computers. all data being moved is always a copy. additionally deleting chunks of your brain program while it is actively running your conciousness would just cause it to crash unrecoverably and corrupt the rest of the data, "killing" you. you have just arrived at that executives idea about killing yourself after the transfer all on your own

As evidenced by him seeing his human hands at first, then when Catherine literally tells him he's a robot he says "I don't want to think about it, I want out". He want to stick his fingers in his ears go "lalalala" and wake up back in Canada.

Not until he finds out about the ARK he gets excited and pushes for launching it because it gives him something to focus on somewhere to escape to. Even if he deep down understands he won't be on the ARK, he ignores that because the reality of what is happening is too hard to face for him.

Life on Earth and survived multiple mass extinction events, no reason to make this one a permanent death via AI rape all because we are unable to accept that our species has lost to an asteroid so in turn we are going to unleash something the rape AI with a horrid concept of "life" in order to get in last hit of copeium in even as the last humans are a lady hooked up to a life support machine, a brain damaged brian scan chimera, and the digital ghost of some autistic Chinese lady on a motherboard. No, you're dumb. If you make a clone of your mind, all you've done is create a conscious being from nothing who could theoretically suffer forever, without ever having the chance to make a meaningful decision, because he lives in a computer chip. Your current consciousness has zero chance to enter the "paradise" chip, and if you plan to put yourself into the chip and kill yourself, then you could have just skipped a step and killed yourself to start. Making a clone of yourself, or having kids, is creating a life out of nothing, without pain, anxiety, or any needs of any kind, and putting it into a world where it'll have to suffer. It's ok to do this with your children, because our lives have inherent meaning, because we live in a material world where we can make meaningful decisions.

No, you are you. Things that aren't you aren't you. The reason Simon wants to make the clone is to escape the hopeless situation he's in. There is zero chance that creating a clone of himself will let him escape the bottom of the sea. He's just making a thinking, feeling computer program that will potentially enjoy it's existence in a simulation of paradise. That's pointless. Hell, even shooting the thing into space doesn't achieve anything. None of the brain scans are active ("alive") until you turn the machine on. It's better for them not to be put into a situation where they're trapped in a space box that will eventually decay and turn into a nightmare. Even if the machine doesn't ever degrade, does that mean they'll live forever? The human mind can't comprehend that.

It's not a coin flip. You are you. You're your body, mind, and consciousness. Are you thinking? You are.

not really. pointless would be to cower in a corner and die. he did something. the copy has his exact memories (up to the point of backing up his brain). while it's not him, a copy of him still gets to live on. and who knows, maybe some alien civilization will find the box and see what humans once were. like that golden disc we sent up there. humans love to document their existence.

There is no distinction, that's my point. You're creating life that'll have no meaning to its existence because it's trapped in a box in space. They have no agency in their existence because they're just code on a hard drive. They didn't need to exist, but you made them. They can't do anything with existence except exist until it all degrades. The only "point" to the whole project is to create a paradise for people you've created to experience paradise. It's pointless. It's also arrogant in the assumption that you'll be able to create a paradise to begin with. They'll all just be tortured minds in a box, potentially unable to even die.

You and I are having a fundamental disagreement on the concept of self. I'm saying that you and your unbroken chain of conscious thoughts and physical form are what constitute who "you" are. The fact that some other being shares a perfect copy of your thoughts and opinions as of one instant ago is irrelevant when determining your identity. He is another being and not "you." What's more, he is your creation. Everything he does or that happens to him is your responsibility, and so creating him is not a decision to be made lightly. NTA, but the entropy cannot decrease in isolated systems.
Whether the universe is an isolated system is an open question but currently it doesn't appear to be due to a bunch of things like lacking a proper boundary (unless we count the big bang as one) and a bunch of bullshit related to space expansion. Basically when the special relativity starts taking the wheel, lots of shit stops making sense and this includes entropy as a way to describe thermodynamic systems.

People in the ARK are fully aware of the nature of existence and that they are merely computer programs living in a virtual reality orbiting the sun.
