linux has plenty of alternatives for everything except very specialized software like photoshop which most people just don't need. gimp is gonna be plenty enough to create whatever meme you want to post here.
the problem is that people don't want alternatives, they want to use exactly the same software, they want the system to look exactly the same, and that's just not gonna happen. if you want to move to linux prepare to make some changes, like not needing to manually update your software.

If you want to try something new or be more "free" at the expense of certain software compatibility (Even though it's not *that* difficult for developers to target Linux), try out a flavour of Linux.
If you want some uncharted territory shit to try and make games work, try any flavour of BSD.

Imagine shilling for Microsoft of all the other possible companies.
They were always huge pieces of shit and I only use their shitty systems because I had to.
You don't need to be tech savvy to understand how bloated and shit they are, just open task manager and watch how your cpu usage randomly has 10% or so usage just for their shitty "antimalware" and similar shit that doesn't even have anything to do with Windows Defender.
Their behaviour with 10 was disgusting buf thankfully there were ways to stop it from updating.
11 is the last straw and the next pc I buy I'll use linux since linux devs make drivers even when the manufacturer doesn't for non Windows systems.
Will stick with 10 for years just like I did with XP and 7.
There aren't even any good new big budget video games coming out, just non stop stream of outsorced, soulless slop.

what benefits does one reap from taking the more difficult path?
Arch Linux's popularity and its consequences have been a disaster for the Linux community. I remember when "Install Gentoo" was just a silly /g/ meme poking fun at hobbyist distros but now people all over the internet unironically recommend Arch, which is nearly on the same level in terms of install complexity and post-install fiddling.

the main issue with your argument is that you're assuming that windows is easier to troubleshoot than linux, and that's just wrong.
linux can and will save you time on the long run. run into an issue? just run this command. on windows you'll be 10 layers deep in gui settings to do the same thing.

Just install Arch. CachyOS is a meme, since by the time it's a good idea to use it for the tradeoff of stability for performance, you will know enough about Arch to just convert an Arch install to use CachyOS optimizations (there's even a section in the CachyOS guide specifically for adding the packages to Arch).
>>723231563
Basically this.
If you need newer packages on Debian, then you can probably cheat around it by now with flatpaks or something.
If you want to use a lot of different software/hardware, then Arch mostly has you covered with the wiki, the AUR and its up-to-date packages.

That's why we can't have nice things. For the tech illiterate Linux is probably a better choice because the worst that can happen is a broken update once a year. Building your own kernel correctly is very important because you will get into problems straight away if you forget something.
If you aren't afraid of bloat go with systemd, it makes life easier.
I've ran with many problems back then, for example Wayland didn't work well with nV cards with blob drivers and open source drivers were shit.
So I ended up switching back to X11.
Wiki is your best friend, same as with Arch.
Highly recommenced you give it a try if you want to understand how your OS is built.

It's very fun for sure, if you like learning new things.
It made me appreciate how well everything works together, there are so many different configurations of hardware and software.
It's a miracle PCs work at all with all the complexity.
But at the same time you realize how much bloat there is once you build your OS to fit your specific needs.
With how powerful the hardware is right now I doubt there is much performance to be gained but if you have some crusty old laptop it should make a difference once you compile everything nicely.

People with no money, no influence, and no knowledge of anything really are gonna out smart the big bad tech companies. Its almost like when a child hides from the parents and the parents play along.

For those people it's great, but if that's not you, then just Arch or Debian will fit your needs better and function correctly.

Loooong time Linux user both professionally and for personal shit, I've actually gone the other way. I work a job in tech where I use Linux daily for work, and outside of work.
It requires too many compromises for what I do on a daily basis when not working, that being writing mods for video games, digital music production, etc. On top of that, I literally cannot bring myself to tinker with Linux anymore in my free time.
That plus the AUR going down constantly, the malware attacks, and the fact that for the first time in 3 years of -Syu arch finally shit itself on me on my desktop 2 weeks ago.
Don't get me wrong, Linux is still better for like 90% of use cases, even gaming in many cases (especially retro gaming) but man does it require immense compromise if you don't fall into that 90%.

That's the thing about Gentoo and the Genkernel system, being able to install whatever you want in the kernel-level instructions is amazing considering that most OSes don't even allow that level of configuration, but whenever I tried to not include some items like the intel kernel items or nvidia it would not cooperate with my initial installation even with my AMD setup. I wonder if there was something else I was missing because genkernel could also have bad defaults in general. When I went for Gentoo's standard bin install it worked fine out of the box, I used X11 for several years so far, switching between DWM, a little bit of LXQT, and right now KDE Plasma and I haven't had major issues so far. I had some graphic issues with some games on DWM but things got better with KDE.
I would imagine the old days of ricing were important with older machines if you wanted to run Gentoo so it's emerge process didn't take so damn long and have overall good performance, but the modern CPUs have almost, arguably almost irrelevant nowadays unless you wanted to screw around and see how far you can rice the CPU.
Funny how wayland has made decent strides, but it's still GNOME. I remember the PCSX2 devs disabling wayland support a couple years ago and then they enabled it on February. Maybe XOrg will get up to speed on developing again if they're up for competition.

I'm surprised to see that Wayland still hasn't beaten out x11 in any benchmarks, regardless of hardware. Performance is near identical, difference being that when it isn't, x11 outperforms it hard somehow. Essentially there are many cases in benchmarks where wayland absolutely shits itself, and x11 keeps trucking on performing as it should.
Wayland has somehow had a near decade of active development, and it still doesn't really compare.

they've added a bunch of protocols these past couple of years which will satisfy most people, you just need to wait for application and compositors downstream to implement them.
at some point you need to start cutting or nothing gets done. nvidia for example has happily dragged their feet these last 10 years with wayland support and they'll keep doing it as long as everyone keeps playing ball with x11. steam is doing the same shit with their 32 bit libraries forcing everyone to compile their shit for them.

I know this thread is mostly bait and bait takers but if you really want to switch to linux I highly recommend that you dualboot for the first few months. The best way to do it is to have a separate drive as windows will happily plow through your Linux boot sector when it updates.
You won't lose access to your files on Windows as Linux will readily read the ntfs filesystem. I myself have only a single linux drive (ex4) while everything else is ntfs still.
This way if there is something you want to do and aren't sure how or just don't feel like messing around with it you can boot back into windows.
For my specifically I kept linux on it's own small nvme drive that way if something nuked I could reinstall and not lose anything and it's worked wonderfully.
I never boot into windows anymore for anything and I'm Linux 100% of the time now.
It's not about that linux can't do anything, it's that after using Windows for your whole life learning how to do things in linux is a pain in the ass.
Give it a shot anons.

I did install the dependency like I mentioned in my post. It then tried to launch and just crashed with a vague error. Sadly I already deleted the game in question because I finished it on Windows afterwards so I can't test it anymore.
Since I want to start weaning myself off Windows though, next time I run into something like that I'll give it a more proper look and try using the terminal. I mostly just wanted to generally poll people to see what they use to run non-steam games.

Nvidia is more focused on fixing DX12 performance apparently than all the fucking wayland issues.
So if I want to switch to Linux right now my options are to either buy an AMD GPU, or stick to X11 and have a weird fucking setup going.
Not that I am not considering it anyways, in hopes that in the future I will switch to wayland and BAM, all the bugs are gone, maybe by 2075, but it is annoying to have to switch sessions -just- so I can actually take advantage of what my display is capable of. Partially.

This is what pisses me off the most.
With GNOME I fully expect the devs to be faggots about everything they decide is the future for the project, I know what to expect. I know they love cock and AIDS. I know that a new GNOME update won't make me happy. It's predictably awful.
But Plasma?
I was really happy with 5.20 something, it was slowly getting to a point where I couldn't accuse them of having a crashy thing (though they did some fuckery with window borders they replaced without asking I really disliked) and then with 6 they decide to fuck it all. The end product doesn't look that different or better. But my setting to increase font scaling is gone. Now I have fractional scaling. Everyone says it's so perfect and on my display it does awful fucking things to the fonts that cannot be shown with screenshots because for some reason they don't show up. And Plasma used to be shite on Wayland, now it's all they're focusing on, but Plasma on Wayland is absolutely horrible on nvidia.

for fonts specifically it sounds like you have some kind of nonstandard subpixel layout (or worse). KDE doesn't expose settings for that because they're faggots even though fontconfig is a Xorg default.

No no, that's a separate issue.
One thing I noticed by taking screenshots and zooming in very close between different distros is that these fontconfig settings are fairly different. I made a comparison between Fedora and CachyOS and by default, while on both applications like Dolphin are using subpixel rendering, for some wild reason, on Cachy the settings panel for Plasma is using greyscale. It's inconsistent.
I'm willing to ignore that problem myself, the problem is Firefox (wayland program) sees 125% fractional scaling (or the previous, or the next scaling setting to that) and either:
1. Completely distorts fonts without wayland fractional scaling enabled set in about:config
2. With it enabled, it decides whether fonts should be blurry or sharp depending on how big the window is (and it so happens that if the window is maximized, that particular size makes the fonts blurry). What's wild about this is that on Hyprland I always get sharp fonts that go blurry only while resizing.
So my previous fix was to instead just change the scaling on fonts rather than use fractional scaling. This actually had firefox on wayland look fine without any distorted fonts. That's how I did it on GNOME and it worked. Bonus for smaller decorations because Adwaita makes everything waste too much space. But nooo, let's remove that option, said Plasma 6 developers.

It's such shit compared to PS and it goes out of its way to call common photoshop functions different unintuitive names. Rather than just being the FOSSshop version it was meant to be, the devs have some sad cope that they need to differentiate themselves from photoshop because some company may actively choose to integrate GIMP into their workflow (they won't).

I did. but once I added a third language it started bugging out. Every couple language changes it would just stop working, until I spammed some changes and it would start working. Windows does it so much better.

>wayland program
there's the issue
the first step in fixing any rendering or graphical issue on linux is to stop using wayland
want to keep using it? that's okay, but then it's purely your problem and only you can fix it. that's by design. unlike X11, Wayland exports all display responsibility onto the program itself without any standardization. you, yourself, have to fork firefox or plasma, fix it in code, and make a pull request that you hope to god gets merged. that's the only way you're solving this issue, because it's a wayland as implemented by firefox through Plasma issue, because every single fucking program in wayland has to do its own rendering its own way.

every single program that runs on a common API for Windows, MacOS, and Linux X11? like, I can name thousands. NT Window Display, Explorer, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, WinZIP, every single window; doesn't fucking matter, they all use a common set of abstractions that fit within the "window" framework on Windows. same goes for every application in X11. Wayland goes "lmao no fuck that" and forces every program to do its own window shadow, own title bar, own scaling, own window handling, own display, without a a common library. desktop enviroments like KDE or GNOME can override that, but only up to a point, and there's nothing dictating consistency between them.

What are you talking about? custom resolutions and refresh rates have been used on linux with x11 for decades, because thats the norm for crt monitors. You just use xrandr to add a new mode. It works on amd, intel and nvidia.
>>723243086

There's not a single modern application that still uses X11 drawing primitives. Every X11 window does direct rendering just like any Wayland application.
>and forces every program to do its own window shadow, own title bar,
That's window decorations, they have nothing to do with direct rendering. And wayland doesn't client side decorations: there's a protocol for server side decorations and most compositors aside from gnome implement it.
>own scaling
Only X11 applications are scale themselves. Windows, macOS and Wayland have server side scaling.
>without a a common library
There was never single GUI toolkit on Linux, Wayland or X11. X11 had drawing primitives that are not relevant for a decade and no modern graphical toolikt is using them.

Kinda. NVidia won't open source their drivers and keep dragging their feet with their Linux drivers. It's better than it was, but still not nearly as good as Intel and AMD.

Gnome is the most popular or second most popular wayland compositor. As such if you create "wayland software" you are required to implement client-side decorations or gnome users cant use your application properly. If you have implemented client-side decorations you might as well enable it on every wayland compositor and then you dont have to bother with yet another protocol that wont be used everywhere. So in practice it's meaningless that a protocol exists if gnome/kde doesn't implement it. It might as well not exist, unless you create kde/gnome specific software rather than wayland software.

That's only relevant for "pure" Wayland applications developers. Everyone else are using toolkits and most toolkits already implement clientside decorations, even SDL. If applications developer don't want to draw his own decorations there's always libdecor.
>f you have implemented client-side decorations you might as well enable it on every wayland compositor and then you dont have to bother with yet another protocol that wont be used everywhere.
Nobody is doing that. Every application that did decorations out of spite because of GNOME always checks for decoration support from compositor.
>So in practice it's meaningless that a protocol exists if gnome/kde doesn't implement it.
KDE implements decorations protocol, retard. Ask your shitGPT more before writing this nonsense.
