AGE OF EMPIRES 2!
You NEED a high IQ to play this.

Are there games with the AoE2 aesthetic but focused on the city building aspect instead?

Couldn't agree more, I play it to be comfy and can't stand the turbospergs who do shit like this >>723231580 where they have the grid turned on and the trees ass small and shit.

I want to grow and defend my little town listening to the relaxing music and wondering about the lives of each of my villagers as they go about their tasks.

You mean it looks beautiful if you purposefully set up a picturesque town in the map editor, it doesn't look anywhere that lovely in actual gameplay

aoe2 is one of my most played games, but I will never get over the fact that they never bothered to fix the walls.
also
>placing towers behind walls instead of integrating them into the structure
yeah, I get, towers are ten times weaker than walls so you have to do it, but what about a mechanic that allows you placing them ON a wall, so that the wall has to be destroyed first until the tower can be touched?
and don't get me started on not being able to place archers and siege weapons on walls.

That's what replays are for. Facegrind against multiplayer until you can win, then watch your own victories back. I think the game is actually so well built visually that even competitive-viable bases look nice when you aren't desperately flicking back and forth across them. Can just watch guys farm and cut wood while your army is off doing what it's already done.

I lost track of all the scrimblo civs they added.
How many are there nowadays? I stopped at that dukes of the west expansion.

>play any map that isn't 100% open land

I used to agree with the small trees thing but losing the game because there was an invisible hole in a wall by a treeline really is the most infuriating fucking thing.

I'm pro pussywood, but all you had to do was drag the wall line into the forest instead of trying to stop right in front of it.

Housewall. In particular on a slope. It really is inevitable if you play with big trees.

that's why I always attempt to squeeze in palisades between houses and trees. they are, like, 3 wood per piece.

Every time I feel like playing a different RTS it just makes me want to find a new custom campaign on SC2 to play instead.

I hope that modern city builders move away from the grid style, it doesn't suit ancient/medieval cities

I remember comming back last year because of nostalgia after seeing how beautiful DE looks and how fun the tournaments are.
Now seeing the game just stress me and it's not comfy anymore

those were roman military camps, not cities. Rome was an absolute clusterfuck with no semblance of urban planning whatsoever

For me, it's Age of Mythology.

Also, I totally forgot the Alexander DLC for AoE2 is launching today. Thank you for the reminder.

I remember my first game ending with a population crisis because I didn't realise your villagers don't fuck if you have them all in a dormitory instead of their own houses, so everyone aged out all at once. I sent all the wrinklies on a death march out into the woods to build a church there before I lost the game.
