Finally getting round to playing this.

What difficulty is best?

It's a very oldschool type of game, so Normal is the way to start. Hard is actually HARD, and outright removes many modern handholding aspects, such as target-lockdown.

My main two cents I can offer you is to not rush through the game, take your time with it, AND do not stop playing after the first chapter (route "A"), like those idiotic IGN game journos did, missing out 3/4 of the whole story.

the controls fucking suck
the camera is fucking awful
the map is a fucking joke
the environments are small and shitty
the game won't hesitate to suddenly shift your forced perspective in the middle of a fight
DOUBLE TAP A MOVEMENT DIRECTION TO DODGE OR RUN IS PURE FUCKING CANCER
this gameplay for this game isn't very good

>the controls fucking suck
>DOUBLE TAP A MOVEMENT DIRECTION TO DODGE
...so you're playing on a fucking KEYBOARD?
The game itself and everyone around you recommends using a gamepad for a reason. It's the default, intended way for all 3D fighting games for a reason.

Everyone else you mentioned is just nonsense shitposting. The small maps thing is only a net positive aspect, it's not an "open world game".

controllers are gay and so are you faggot
the thing about the camera suddenly going top down and locking you there in the middle of a boss fight is not nonsense shitposting did you actually play the fucking game or are you just lying

Normal. Hard is pretty hard early on and the balance is wack, functionally it just wastes your time and then feels weird later on.

>lol no fucking way, is their review just based on that?
Yup. And they were not the only one, I'm afraid.

This one Finnish gaming magazine literally released an apology-review 2 years later, openly admitting that they didn't realize they only played the prologue chapter, and thus bashed it as an "overpriced, short, too easy game, with nothing memorable or different to speak of". Not surprisingly, their score jumped several digits on the second try.

I think he means to talk to npcs or something. I would advise you TO rush through it personally lol. I feel like they messed up with this game quite a bit, I love it to bits but
>the JRPG progression system feels tacked on and makes the game too easy after a point
>it tries to be a hard action game with the hard and very hard modes but they're just weirdly balanced gimmicks that lead to instakills and HP sponges
>the 'open' world takes away from the otherwise great narrative

Ideally I would wish that the game just had a more streamlined level/chip system, a smaller world, and better designed bosses and enemies.

It's a bad game anon, don't fall for the meme like I did. It doesn't get better 10 hours in, 30 hours in, after you clear all routes or anything. It's bad all around, and would barely be mentioned anywhere if it wasn't for the coomer bait.

Game is ass. Run around big empty space for long time. Yo this gameplay is fire!!! Hahahahahaha
Anonymous No.723237954 [Report]

This. The intro is fun and really well made, and makes you thing you're going to embark on a memorable adventure. But then you hit the open world, and you'll find yourself waiting for the game to hit that high again. It never does. Unless you're the edgy type that thinks "nothing matters cause nihilism lmao" is good writing, there's nothing worthwhile to find here.

>Noooo it gets better after you replay the entire game you didn't like another time with a more boring character with shittier gameplay!
I humoured /v/ back then, and played up until the final route. I regret ever allowing you scum to make me believe it was going to be worth it. 40 hours I'll never get back.

Hard is the better difficulty, normal is way too easy. Also, make sure you're playing with japanese audio, at least until you get to part B. the english voice actress for 2B is fucking awful, a literal newgrounds porn VA because there was a SAG strike going on at the time
ignore midwits saying the game is trash, they've been saying the exact same shit for a few years now. formulate your own opnion. i'm shocked they didnt attach the one webm they always post of her running in the desert area
Anonymous No.723238237 [Report]
>>723238113
forgot to mention that the game doesn't let you save until you beat the prologue, and if you play it on hard that might be a challenge and you may end up starting it over and doing the entire half hour multiple times like i did (which didnt bother me, i love this fucking game). you can just do that on normal and then switch to hard if you want, or you can git gud from the beginning

Can't stress this enough. These people suck, the threads for the first couple of years were great.

The game has instant heals you can spam at any time so your choice is
>never die
or
>get oneshot randomly
The enemies are also pretty basic so the fun of the combat is more in trying to do cool tricks yourself and fucking around with different weapon combos, there's little to gain from hard mode, especially so when later down in the game a death will be a massive setback and break the pace of the story because "Muh no checkpoints for lore reasons"

i'm also noticing that there has been an odd trend recently of people making threads saying "i'm trying out the game for the first time" and its usually on mondays (or maybe i'm imagining that part). as soon as these threads pop up, the usual suspects rush in to deliver their prerecorded statements
>>723238695

when does this happen? i dont remember this ever being a problem even in the final chapter, there are teleport/checkpoint machines everywhere?
Anonymous No.723238849 [Report]
>>723233485 (OP)
Very hard means you're dead in one hit.

Hard is fine, except the prologue is relatively long with no checkpoints with a boss that can kill you very easily on hard, forcing you to start from the beginning.

so you created the problem for this one very specific portion of the game, knowing full well what it would be like, so you would have something to complain about. bravo

died 3 times on the tutorial too, then i found out i have healing potions and did a no death run across all 3 routes.(self destructing on ship doesn't count)

You should play on Normal. The higher difficulties are pretty tricky on the first run, especially before you actually unlock your full toolset.

If you wanna play on hard just learn how to abuse the damage bug, ez w

The hardest difficulty means the difficulty closest to hard. It can't be very hard since there's a very in front.
Anonymous No.723239560 [Report] >>723239856
>>723239226
whats the damage bug? i only thought hard was difficult for the first couple hours, once you get chips that give you health on hit/health on kill and then the ones that give all your normal attacks shockwaves it becomes very manageable, but i'm also pretty good at action games to begin with
Anonymous No.723239692 [Report]
>>723233485 (OP)
Easiest available. The combat feels weightless like some cheap chinese mmo and the "open world" is a bore to traverse. It also doesn't respect your time making you replay almost the entire first act again just to get to the next part of the story. I highly recommend watching the JP dub version anime instead. I don't think the ENG version has 5:1 audio available but I could be wrong.

The thing that gives you 10x damage on the dash attack, you'll have to google it if you want the details I don't remember them
Anonymous No.723239921 [Report]
>>723239702
either, they're not really that tied together. i suppose playing replicant first would give you a little more insight into some events in automata but its not going to make or break the experience
>>723239856
i'll look into it, dont think i ever bothered with that chip because i fought from a distance most of the time

Nier Automata is one of the greatest video games of the century. Of course a beautiful, atmospheric, fun game, that celebrates the history of humanity AND video games would not appeal to ADHD fags.

If you are unsure, you can start with Automata.

If you want to experience the lore in actual Chronological order, you would have to start with Drakengard 1, then Nier 1, and then Automata.

Replicant first because the gameplay is more ass but the story is better with the "OG" tracks.
Automata after than, but it's kind of the same story in a way.
